All Valorant Vyse Abilities Explained

October 26, 2026 10 min read

Vyse is a Sentinel who turns enemy movement into a disadvantage. She hides traps, separates an entrant from teammates, blinds players who look at her flash, punishes movement with a damaging slow field, and temporarily locks enemy primary weapons. Her strongest sequences usually create a short, unfair-looking gunfight rather than holding a lane forever: isolate someone with Shear, force or catch movement with Razorvine, then take the duel while Arc Rose or Steel Garden removes part of the opponent’s advantage.

The details below reflect Riot’s ability descriptions from Vyse’s Patch 9.04 introduction and the latest located Vyse balance changes in Patch 11.08 (October 14, 2025). Patch 13.02 (July 28, 2026) fixed a Razorvine bug, while the latest located notes, Patch 13.06 (September 22, 2026), contain no Vyse changes.

What does Vyse do in VALORANT?

Vyse is built around setup and punishment. Her utility does not simply watch a route in the way a traditional tripwire does; it makes an opponent who enters, looks, or keeps moving easier to isolate and fight. Riot’s agent team described her as an answer to a coordinated rush that relies on overwhelming a site together.

Ability Primary purpose What the enemy can still do
Shear Separates an enemy from teammates with a temporary wall Probe the trigger zone and bait the activation
Arc Rose Blinds players looking at the deployed flash Destroy it after its windup begins under Patch 11.08 rules
Razorvine Slows and damages players who move through its active nest Stop moving, leave the area, or shoot the nest
Steel Garden Temporarily jams primary weapons in its area Use pistols and abilities during the jam

Vyse’s value comes from combining those effects. A wall can create the isolation, a flash can make the isolated player look away, and a slow field can punish the escape route. Steel Garden changes the weapon matchup for everyone caught in its radius, but it is not a complete silence or ability disable.

How does Shear work?

Shear is an invisible wall trap. Vyse places liquid-metal filaments, and an enemy who enters and then exits the trigger zone causes an indestructible wall to rise immediately behind them for a brief period.

Trigger and warning

Patch 11.08 clarified that the wall does not appear merely because an enemy touches the edge. The opponent must enter the zone and then exit it. That player hears a cue on entering the zone; the sound is audible only to the affected enemy, so Vyse and her allies do not receive the same warning. An attacker can therefore test a suspected location and deliberately trigger the wall before committing to the rest of the push.

What the wall is for

The wall is temporary and described by Riot as indestructible. Treat it as a separation window, not a permanent barricade. A defender can place Shear behind a common entry path so the first player who crosses is cut off from the players behind them. On attack, it can split a retake route or isolate a defender who rotates through a doorway.

Best follow-up

Once the wall rises, fight during the short period before it disappears. Arc Rose is the natural partner because the separated player has fewer teammates available to trade the flash. Riot designer Kevin Meier summarized the intended sequence as: “Ultimately, the 1-2 combo we see working well for Vyse is her wall followed by her flash.” That is design guidance, not a guarantee; the isolated player can still use their own utility and may have already recognized the trap.

Shear counterplay

  • Have the first player clear likely trap positions and listen for the private entry cue.
  • Use a low-commitment probe to activate the wall before the main group enters.
  • If trapped, avoid taking an unwinnable duel simply because the wall is present; hold a position, use a flash or smoke, and wait for the barrier to end when possible.

How does Arc Rose work?

Arc Rose is a placeable flash that can be hidden on a surface or through it. Vyse reactivates the deployed rose to blind every player looking toward it, then can pick it up and redeploy it later.

Placement and activation

Arc Rose is designed for pre-round preparation. Hide it where an opponent is likely to look while entering a site, clearing a close angle, or swinging around cover. Vyse chooses when to detonate it, so the value comes from waiting until an enemy’s attention is committed rather than activating as soon as someone is nearby.

Patch 11.08 changes

Riot’s October 14, 2025 balance update changed several parts of Arc Rose:

  • Flash duration decreased from 2.25 seconds to 2.0 seconds.
  • The rose became destructible after its flash windup starts.
  • The cooldown after destruction increased from 45 seconds to 60 seconds.
  • Recalling the rose always applies a 20-second cooldown.
  • The successful-flash audio cue and the associated voice line that alerted Vyse and her allies were removed.

The result is a flash that is less guaranteed once it begins its windup. Do not assume that a hidden rose will always complete its effect: an alert opponent can shoot it during that window. Conversely, the removal of the successful-flash notification means Vyse’s team must communicate or observe the result rather than relying on an automatic confirmation.

Using Arc Rose with Shear

Shear supplies the separation; Arc Rose supplies the moment to take the duel. Place the rose so the isolated player must look toward it to clear the angle, or trigger it as that player swings into your crosshair. If the rose is visible too early, the enemy can destroy it or turn away before the windup finishes.

How does Razorvine work?

Razorvine is an invisible-on-landing deployable nest. Vyse throws the liquid-metal nest, and it becomes hidden after landing. When activated, it spreads into a large area that slows and damages players who move through it.

Damage and movement rules

The slow and damage are tied to movement through the active nest, according to Riot’s description. A player caught in it can reduce the punishment by stopping rather than repeatedly trying to run out. Movement is also noisy, which gives Vyse information and creates a timing cue for a prepared shot. Riot’s development guidance specifically recommends that a caught player stop moving and prepare for the duel, so a defender should be ready to capitalize instead of waiting for the field alone to secure a kill.

Patch 11.08 health reduction

Patch 11.08 reduced Razorvine’s health from 40 to 20. It is therefore easier for opponents to remove the nest when they have a safe line of fire. Place it where shooting the utility exposes the player to your team, or combine it with Shear so the separated opponent must choose between remaining slowed and exposing themselves while breaking the nest.

Patch 13.02 bug fix

Patch 13.02, published July 28, 2026, fixed a bug that could make Razorvine indestructible if it was deployed at the same moment Vyse was suppressed. That note is a reliability fix, not a new damage or slow value.

Practical placements

  • Cover a choke that enemies must cross to reach a plant site.
  • Put the nest just beyond a Shear trigger so the wall separates the lead player before the field taxes their retreat.
  • Use it on a spike plant or defuse location when your team can hold the angle; the field is most useful when moving through it is more dangerous than waiting.

How does Steel Garden work?

Steel Garden is Vyse’s ultimate. After she equips and fires it, metal thorns spread outward following a windup. Enemies inside the affected area have their primary weapons jammed for a duration.

What “jammed” means

A jammed player cannot use a rifle, submachine gun, shotgun, sniper rifle, or other primary weapon while the effect lasts. Riot’s designer clarified that pistols and abilities remain available. Steel Garden is therefore a temporary weapon restriction, not a full disable: an opponent can still fight with a sidearm, throw utility, or reposition.

Patch 11.08 timing and radius

Riot increased the initial windup from 3.4 seconds to 4.4 seconds and reduced the radius from 32.5 meters to 26 meters in Patch 11.08. The current values make deliberate placement and timing essential. Fire it too early and enemies can leave before the jam; fire it from too far away and the smaller radius may miss the players you need to affect.

When it creates an advantage

Use Steel Garden when your team can immediately take space after the windup: during a site hit, a retake through a choke, or a fight around a planted spike. A rifle advantage is not removed forever, so coordinate the push for the jam window. On a low-buy round, the ultimate can also neutralize an enemy team’s expensive primary weapons and make your pistols relatively more competitive, although opponents still retain their sidearms and abilities.

How should you combine Vyse’s abilities in a round?

Think in phases: prepare hidden utility, force a predictable movement decision, then fight while the enemy’s options are reduced. The exact order changes with the site and the information your team has.

Defending an expected entry

  1. Place Shear behind the first doorway or choke that a leading attacker is likely to cross.
  2. Hide Arc Rose where the isolated player will look while clearing the next angle.
  3. Put Razorvine on the route that player must use to retreat or swing out.
  4. When the wall activates, call the separation and trigger Arc Rose only when your crosshair and teammates are ready.
  5. Hold your fire discipline: the goal is a coordinated duel, not automatic activation of every piece of utility at once.

Attacking a defended site

  1. Use Shear to divide a defender from a rotation or retake path rather than placing it in an area defenders can safely ignore.
  2. Recall and redeploy Arc Rose when the defense changes its setup, remembering that recall imposes a 20-second cooldown.
  3. Save Razorvine for the plant, a post-plant defuse lane, or a choke that the defenders must cross.
  4. If Steel Garden is available, announce the target area and start the hit so teammates arrive as the windup completes.

Retaking with Steel Garden

Steel Garden is strongest when the enemy cannot simply wait out the windup. Pair it with information about the spike location, cover that blocks exits, or another teammate’s crowd-control utility. Once the jam lands, prioritize the players who are forced into close fights; do not assume every enemy is harmless, because pistols can still kill and abilities still function.

What changed for Vyse in recent VALORANT patches?

Patch and date Vyse-related information
9.04, August 2024 Introduced Vyse and supplied the baseline descriptions for Shear, Arc Rose, Razorvine, and Steel Garden.
11.08, October 14, 2025 Clarified Shear’s enter-then-exit trigger and private cue; adjusted Arc Rose, Razorvine health, and Steel Garden windup and radius.
13.02, July 28, 2026 Fixed a suppression-timing bug that could make Razorvine indestructible.
13.06, September 22, 2026 The latest located official patch notes contain no Vyse change.

Patch values are balance values, not universal performance statistics. The latest located notes do not establish that no later hotfix or undocumented adjustment exists, so verify the in-client descriptions when exact current numbers matter.

Are Vyse’s costs, charges, and every duration known?

Not from the official material used for this explainer. The located sources establish the Arc Rose changes, Razorvine health change, and Steel Garden windup and radius values above, but they do not provide a complete current list of ability costs, charge counts, or exact durations for every effect. Use the current in-client ability panel for those values, especially after a future patch.

What are Vyse’s main strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

  • She can turn one careless entry into an isolated duel.
  • Her hidden setup remains useful before the enemy reveals its exact route.
  • Razorvine makes movement both costly and audible, improving the value of a held angle.
  • Steel Garden can reverse a rifle advantage or support a low-buy attack.

Weaknesses and counterplay

  • Shear can be baited because the enemy hears its entry cue and controls when to exit the zone.
  • Arc Rose can be destroyed during its windup under current rules, and its flash lasts two seconds rather than the former 2.25 seconds.
  • Razorvine has only 20 health after Patch 11.08, so exposed placement is easy to clear.
  • Steel Garden has a 4.4-second windup and a 26-meter radius, allowing alert opponents to leave or play around its edge.
  • None of these tools removes all enemy actions: pistols and abilities remain available during Steel Garden, and trapped players can still use their own utility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can enemies hear Vyse place Shear?

The important sound cue is tied to an enemy entering Shear’s trigger zone, and Patch 11.08 specifies that only that enemy hears it. Vyse and her teammates do not receive the same automatic warning, so communication and visual information are needed to know whether the trap was tested.

Can Vyse pick up Arc Rose after placing it?

Yes. Vyse can recall the deployed rose and place it again, but the current rules apply a 20-second cooldown every time she recalls it. That makes early repositioning a meaningful timing decision rather than a free reset.

Does Steel Garden stop enemy ultimates?

No such effect is established in Riot’s description. Steel Garden jams primary weapons, while affected players can still use pistols and abilities, so treat it as a gun restriction rather than an ultimate or ability lockout.

What should a player do when caught in Razorvine?

If escaping would require crossing more of the active nest, stopping can reduce the movement-based punishment and limit the noise you give away. Take the prepared duel or wait for a teammate to clear the utility instead of repeatedly running through the field without a plan.
