Capcom Classic Console Games on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch: What to Buy Now

Published 12 min read

The supported way to play Capcom’s classic console games today is to buy the official collections on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. PlayStation 4 editions run on PS5, and Xbox One editions run on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. Nintendo Switch editions are listed as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Native current-generation versions remain uncommon: Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection, released on 27 March 2026, is the notable Mega Man collection with both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions.

Choose a collection by the original hardware you want emulated. Mega Man Legacy Collection covers the numbered home-console games; Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is the route to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike; the Fighting Collections focus on arcade fighters with rollback netcode; and Capcom Arcade Stadium reproduces coin-op versions rather than NES or SNES conversions. A 29-game Korean ratings filing from October 2026 has not become an announced product.

What is the right way to play Capcom classics on each console?

The console you own determines which package to purchase, but the catalog is mostly the same last-generation software. Check the platform line before buying: a PS4 listing is the normal PS5 route, while an Xbox One listing is the normal Series X|S route.

PlayStation 5

Install the PS4 edition from your library or use its disc in a PS5 model with a disc drive. The PS4 versions of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, both Capcom Fighting Collections, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium and the Mega Man Legacy sets are playable through PS5 backward compatibility. They remain PS4 applications rather than native PS5 builds.

Capcom’s documented native PS5 classic releases in 2026 include Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection (27 March), the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (2 April), Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (18 August) and Mega Man X: Command Mission (15 September). Those individual releases do not replace the numbered NES, SNES or arcade collections.

Xbox Series X|S

Buy the Xbox One version when the store listing names Xbox One. Series X|S runs the Xbox One editions of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, both Capcom Fighting Collections, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium and the older Mega Man Legacy sets through backward compatibility. Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection is the significant exception with a native Xbox Series X|S SKU as well as Xbox One.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection does not have an Xbox edition, so Xbox owners cannot use the backward-compatibility route for that particular set.

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2

Switch has the broadest single-console selection of Capcom’s active retro collections. The Switch editions of the Mega Man Legacy, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, both Capcom Fighting Collections, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection and both Arcade Stadium volumes are official products. Nintendo’s store listing for Capcom Fighting Collection 2 marks it “Supported” on Nintendo Switch 2, with game behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch.

These are paid collections rather than entries in a Nintendo Classics subscription catalog. No official Nintendo Switch Online catalog listing was available for Capcom’s first-party NES and Super NES Mega Man or Breath of Fire games; Capcom’s own compilations are the documented purchase path.

How do I play Mega Man 1–6 and the other home-console games?

Start with Mega Man Legacy Collection. Its first volume contains NES Mega Man 1 through 6, with Japanese Rockman and international Mega Man versions, museum material and challenge stages. The Switch edition also offers rewind. Platforms are Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Windows, with the PS4 and Xbox One builds usable on PS5 and Series X|S.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 continues with Mega Man 7 (SNES), Mega Man 8 (PlayStation), and Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10, including their original downloadable content. Volume 2 adds optional extra armor and the same general museum-and-challenge approach.

Capcom reported 1.7 million copies for the first collection as of 30 September 2025, making it the second best-selling Mega Man game in that company tally. Capcom reported more than 1 million copies for Legacy Collection 2 by the same date.

Other Mega Man eras

  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection: X1 through X4.
  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2: X5 through X8.
  • Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection: four Game Boy Advance Zero games and both ZX titles, with a casual difficulty mode.
  • Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection: all six numbered Battle Network games and their extra versions, ten games in total, on PS4, Switch and PC; Xbox is omitted.
  • Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection: the DS trilogy and every version variant, seven games total, released 27 March 2026 on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows.

Star Force adapts the original dual-screen layout to one display and adds auto-save, encounter-rate and damage/defense multipliers, new English and Japanese voice-overs, and online card trading and battles. Online play does not use cross-platform matchmaking.

Which collection is best for classic Street Fighter?

Use Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection when Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is essential. It spans the Street Fighter II family through the third game and remains available on Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Steam. Its PS4 and Xbox One versions cover PS5 and Series X|S owners, respectively.

The later Fighting Collections are different packages. They emphasize arcade preservation, modern training tools and rollback netcode, but they do not include Street Fighter III.

Capcom Fighting Collection

Released 24 June 2022, this ten-game set includes the Darkstalkers series, Red Earth (called Warzard in arcades), Hyper Street Fighter II, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix. It runs on Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Steam. Rollback netcode, training, one-button specials, save and load features, filters, museums and music players are included.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics

This seven-game set launched digitally on Switch, PS4 and Windows on 12 September 2024; physical Switch and PS4 editions followed on 22 November 2024, and Xbox One arrived on 4 February 2025. It contains The Punisher (1993), X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Ranked, casual and spectator modes, training, rollback netcode and a museum are included.

Capcom’s reported worldwide sales reached 1 million copies by September 2025, more than 1.2 million by 31 March 2026 and more than 1.3 million by 30 June 2026.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2

Released 16 May 2025 for Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Steam, this eight-game collection has a US suggested price of $39.99. Physical editions are available for Switch and PS4. Its lineup is:

  • Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro
  • Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001
  • Capcom Fighting Evolution
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper
  • Project Justice
  • Power Stone
  • Power Stone 2
  • Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein

Rollback, training with hitbox display for 2D titles, one-button specials, quick saves in arcade mode, display filters and higher internal resolution for 3D games are included. The museum contains more than 700 artworks and over 300 tracks. An optional “Ver. 2K25” arranged soundtrack was added for Capcom vs. SNK 2, Power Stone 2 and Project Justice; an August 2025 update also added Alpha 3 MAX characters Ingrid, Maki, Yun and Eagle for offline play.

A digital bundle combines Fighting Collection 1 and 2 into 18 games. Capcom’s Steam FAQ says online matches are limited to people using the same platform, so buying the same collection on different systems does not create cross-platform matchmaking.

Are Capcom Arcade Stadium games the NES and SNES versions?

No. Capcom Arcade Stadium and Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium emulate coin-op ROMs. They are the correct choice for arcade 1942, Ghosts ’n Goblins, Final Fight, Strider and similar cabinets, not for the home-console ports with different stages, controls or balancing.

The first Stadium launched on Switch on 17 February 2021 and on PS4, Xbox One and Windows on 25 May 2021. It contains 32 games from 1984–2001 and uses a free host application with packs or individual purchases. Rewind, save states, speed control and CRT-style filters are built in. Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium launched 22 July 2022 on the same platforms with another 32 games, including the Street Fighter Alpha trilogy, Knights of the Round, Magic Sword, Saturday Night Slam Masters, Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.

Capcom reported 1.8 million units for the first Stadium by December 2023 and 1.2 million for the second. A 2026 boxed edition of Stadium Vol. 1 was offered for Switch, PS4 and Xbox Series X|S at a $59.99 MSRP, with five collectible covers and an eight-page booklet. That physical release does not turn the games into home-console versions.

What does the 29-game Korean rating mean?

South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee rated 29 Capcom titles on 27 October 2026. The list includes Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II, Demon’s Crest, Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3, Gargoyle’s Quest II, Mega Man Soccer, Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, the first five Mega Man games, Mega Man X, several arcade beat-’em-ups and multiple Street Fighter entries.

The filing is not a Capcom announcement. It does not establish a collection name, publisher-confirmed platforms, a price, a release date, the number of packages, individual downloads, a subscription placement or even a Korean retail launch. A ratings decision classifies software; it does not commit the publisher to shipping it.

The rumor attracts attention because it mixes games already represented in Arcade Stadium or Legacy Collections with console-focused gaps. Breath of Fire, Breath of Fire II, Demon’s Crest, Final Fight 2, Final Fight 3, Mega Man Soccer, Gargoyle’s Quest II, Destiny of an Emperor and Street Fighter 2010 are not covered by the current official collection map. Until Capcom names a product, buy the existing collections rather than treating the rating as a preorder or release notice.

Can I play these games in a browser?

Capcom Town is a separate web option. Its browser catalog includes home-console versions of Mega Man, Mega Man 4, Mega Man X, Mega Man Soccer, Breath of Fire, Breath of Fire II, Street Fighter II and Final Fight. Capcom Town stated that its full classic lineup would be temporarily unlocked until 1:00 p.m. Japan Standard Time on 2 November 2026.

A browser session is not a PS5, Xbox or Switch SKU, and the temporary-unlock date can pass without changing console availability. Use it for a quick legal look at titles missing from console collections, not as a substitute for an installed collection or a permanent ownership claim.

What should I buy first?

Use this order if you want a practical route through the catalog:

  1. Mega Man Legacy Collection and Legacy Collection 2 for the numbered NES, SNES and PlayStation-era games.
  2. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection if Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is the priority.
  3. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 for eight fighters, rollback and the $39.99 US suggested price; physical copies are on Switch and PS4.
  4. Capcom Arcade Stadium for coin-op 1942, Ghosts ’n Goblins, Final Fight and Strider.
  5. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and the related Marvel crossover games.
  6. Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection when a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S Mega Man release matters more than the NES catalog.

Collections are frequently discounted, so the listed price of a package is not necessarily the price you will pay. Check whether a physical bundle includes every game on the cartridge or disc: the combined Switch package for Mega Man Legacy Collection shipped volume 1 on the game card and volume 2 as a download code.

How do I install and verify a collection?

  1. Choose the original game type. Select a Legacy Collection for home-console Mega Man, Street Fighter 30th for 3rd Strike, a Fighting Collection for arcade fighters, or Arcade Stadium for broader coin-op coverage.
  2. Match the store SKU to your hardware. On PS5, select PS4 unless the listing explicitly says PS5. On Series X|S, select Xbox One unless a Series edition is listed. On Switch 2, confirm the Nintendo store marks the Switch game as supported.
  3. Install the base application and updates. Physical editions may require a download, and the combined Switch Mega Man package requires the volume 2 code.
  4. Open the game’s gallery or options menu. Set display filters, rewind, save-state behavior, difficulty or one-button specials before starting a campaign or arcade run.
  5. Check online requirements separately. Rollback-enabled collections provide online modes, but platform matching and the console’s own online-service requirements still apply. Arcade Stadium is primarily a local and solo preservation package.

What is still unavailable in official modern collections?

The current catalog is extensive but not complete. The most conspicuous home-console omission is a proper modern Breath of Fire collection; both the original and sequel appear in the Korean rating but have not been announced as a new package. Dino Crisis remains frequently requested, while Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams did receive a PS4/PS5 release in 2026.

Mega Man & Bass is another commonly requested gap. Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 remain absent from the established collections even though the arcade Final Fight is available in Stadium. Capcom vs. SNK: SVC Chaos is an SNK-side HD release rather than part of Capcom’s Fighting Collection line.

Producer Shuhei Matsumoto told IGN at EVO 2024 that Capcom wants its classic games available on modern consoles and that the development side shares fans’ interest in more legacy fighting-game releases. He also said Capcom would like to make a new Versus series title. Those comments explain the company’s direction, but they are not release commitments for any unannounced collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use original PS1 or PS2 Capcom discs in a PS5?

There is no documented PS5 path that lets original PlayStation or PlayStation 2 Capcom discs run directly. Use a listed PS4/PS5 digital or physical release, such as the 2026 versions of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams or Mega Man X: Command Mission, when that specific title is supported.

Do Capcom Fighting Collections support cross-play between consoles and PC?

No. Capcom’s Fighting Collection 2 FAQ says online play is restricted to people on the same platform. Friends should buy the same platform edition if they plan to use the ranked, casual or spectator modes together.

Does the combined Switch Mega Man Legacy package include both games on the cartridge?

Not completely. The physical bundle places Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 on the game card and supplies a download code for volume 2, so the second collection requires an internet download and the code must remain available.

Will the Korean 29-game rating guarantee a PS5 collection?

No. The 27 October 2026 GRAC filing confirms only that those titles were rated in South Korea. It gives no confirmed platform, product name, price, release date or packaging plan.

Where can I play Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 right now?

They are not part of the established Arcade Stadium or Legacy Collection releases. The Korean rating lists both games, but Capcom has not announced a console collection containing them, so the rating should not be treated as current availability.
