Every Frieza Form in Dragon Ball Super, Explained from Suppression States to Black Frieza

Published 11 min read

Frieza’s forms are not a simple ladder of increasingly powerful mutations. His First, Second and Third Forms are suppression shells that keep his natural power under control; Final Form is the body he was born with. Golden Frieza is his first deliberately trained evolution, True Golden Frieza is the anime’s mastered version, and Black Frieza is the ten-year time-chamber breakthrough that currently stands above the other versions in the Dragon Ball Super manga. As of October 2026, Black Frieza has not been animated by Toei.

What are all Frieza transformations in order?

The Super-era canon order is: First Form, Second Form, Third Form, Final Form, 100% Full Power, Mecha Frieza, Golden Frieza, True Golden Frieza and Black Frieza. Mecha Frieza is a cybernetic reconstruction rather than a biological transformation, while 100% Full Power is an extreme output state of Final Form.

Form Function Training required Screen or manga availability
First Form Lowest suppression shell None Dragon Ball Z, Super anime and manga
Second Form Suppression shell None Dragon Ball Z, referenced in Super
Third Form Final suppression shell None Dragon Ball Z, referenced by Frost’s analogue
Final Form Frieza’s natural body None All major continuities
100% Full Power Maximum muscular output of Final Form Power control, not a new species form Dragon Ball Z and Super
Mecha Frieza Cybernetic reconstruction Medical rebuilding Post-Namek history
Golden Frieza First trained evolution About four months Resurrection ‘F’, Super and Broly
True Golden Frieza Mastered Golden state Hell-based image training Super anime terminology
Black Frieza Advanced trained evolution Ten years in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber Super manga only

Viz Media often spells the character’s name “Freeza,” but the English title and most modern coverage use “Frieza.”

Why do Frieza’s first three forms suppress his power?

Frieza’s clan grows a bio-suit and can alter its shape. The first three bodies are restraints, not upgrades: they conserve energy, provide camouflage and prevent Frieza’s abnormal strength from running out of control. On Namek, Vegeta explains that such beings modify their forms to conserve energy or hide themselves, and Frieza replies, “My case is somewhat exceptional, though…I choose to remain in my present form to keep my power from running amok!”

That is why a smaller First Form can still destroy planets. Frieza’s power is being held down, not created from nothing when he changes shape. Universe 6’s Frost has analogous charging forms, showing that the shells are a species trait rather than a one-off trick unique to Frieza.

First Form

The small, horned, white-and-purple body is Frieza’s usual public face. He commonly wears battle armor and travels in a hover pod. Even while suppressed, he killed King Vegeta with one blow and destroyed Planet Vegeta with a casual blast.

Frieza states a First Form battle power of 530,000 to Nail; CBR’s 2024 compilation presents that as a canon figure. His First Form debuts in the anime’s episode 44 and manga chapter 247, “Planet Namek, Cold and Dark.” After his revival, he again starts in this body, and Gohan cannot defeat him while he is still suppressing himself.

Second Form

The Second Form is much taller and bulkier, with upward-curving horns and a broken First Form armor silhouette. Frieza uses the horns to gore Krillin. He introduces it by saying, “Heh heh heh! You’re in for it now. My second form makes the one you’re familiar with look as gentle as a sleeping kitten.”

Frieza claims a Second Form battle power of over 1,000,000, a figure compiled by CBR in 2024 from his in-series statement. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, it is called the “Second Transformation.” Kikono suggests it when Frieza wants to appear taller, but Frieza refuses because he wants the height of his natural body instead. King Cold’s familiar silhouette is similar, although the story does not establish that Cold uses exactly the same sequence.

Third Form

The Third Form is the brief, xenomorph-like shell: an elongated skull, heavy shoulder ridges and spikes extending from the head. Frieza mainly uses it against Nail-fused Piccolo before moving on to his true body.

No official in-series numeric battle power has been published for Third Form. CBR’s 2024 canon-power-level summary explicitly leaves it without a number, so any multiplier circulated online is fan calculation rather than an established statistic.

What is Frieza’s Final Form, and how does 100% Full Power work?

Final Form is not another shell hiding a stronger body. It is Frieza’s birth form: sleek, nearly hornless, slightly taller than First Form and voiced at a higher pitch. When the suppression shell shatters, the bio-suit reveals the body he naturally possesses.

Guidebook figures presented by CBR’s 2024 “Canon Power Level” table give Final Form at 50% as 60,000,000 and Final Form at full power as 120,000,000. These are published guidebook-style figures, not a new 2026 measurement, and they should not be used to calculate modern Super-era multipliers.

100% Full Power is a muscle-swollen push of Final Form, first used against Super Saiyan Goku on Namek and later against Frost in the Tournament of Power. It increases output at a severe stamina cost. ScreenRant notes that Frieza begins bulking up after roughly 85% power, producing the same kind of inefficient strength-for-speed trade-off associated with Super Saiyan Third Grade.

After his resurrection, simply powering up to Final Form vaporizes nearly all of his 1,000 soldiers, and he can exchange blows with god-tier Goku before activating Golden Frieza. That scene reinforces the distinction: Final Form is already extraordinarily strong, even before the trained evolutions.

Was Mecha Frieza a real transformation?

No. After Namek, King Cold’s doctors rebuild Frieza with cybernetic parts, creating Mecha Frieza. Future Trunks kills him in that state almost immediately. When the Dragon Balls restore Frieza for Resurrection ‘F’ and Dragon Ball Super, the medical machinery returns him to a fully organic body.

Mecha Frieza therefore belongs in the character’s history, not on the biological transformation ladder. It supplies no separate racial form or known multiplier.

How did Frieza unlock Golden Frieza?

Golden Frieza is the first genuine power-up Frieza earns through training. After his resurrection, he trains for about four months, according to the Dragon Ball Wiki’s Power and Abilities summary and CBR’s 2026 figure coverage. Because he had never trained seriously before, that short period produces a dramatic jump.

The movie Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ introduced the form in 2015; the Dragon Ball Super television anime followed with episode 24, and the manga later used it in chapter 37. The gold bio-suit has darker gold limbs, a purple face, hands and feet, a flame-like aura and redder ki. Frieza names it himself: “I know gold’s a bit gauche, but I wanted to ensure you grasp my new position atop the pecking order. And for the sake of your feeble mind, let’s keep the name simple as well; we’ll call this Golden Frieza.”

Why did Golden Frieza run out of energy?

The first Golden battle exposes a control problem rather than a limit on raw power. Goku tells him, “Your new form is burning through more power than your body can supply. You should have waited until you were used to this form and knew how to regulate it before you started picking fights.” In the anime, unmastered Golden lasts just over five minutes before its power drops sharply.

V-Jump in January 2017 ranked Golden Frieza eighth out of twelve on a Super-rivals danger scale and stated that it surpassed Super Saiyan Blue. Frieza fixes the early stamina drain through later training. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he remains Golden while fighting Super Saiyan Broly for one hour, demonstrating that the original collapse problem is gone.

Vegeta’s line in that film foreshadows the next step: “You remember how much stronger Frieza was when he came back to Earth? What happens when he achieves a newer form?!”

What is True Golden Frieza?

True Golden Frieza is the anime’s name for Golden Frieza after Frieza improves his control. During a second stay in Hell, he uses mental imagery to train against Goku and learns to regulate immense power without losing composure.

When he reveals the result, he explains that the torture of Hell forced him to exercise his mental focus and energy modulation. He concludes: “It’s the true manifestation of Golden Frieza! This is who I truly am in my purest form.” The scene shows him balancing blue aura in one hand and red aura in the other before releasing a fiery wave.

True Golden appears against Universe 9 assassins, Cabba, Dyspo, Top and Jiren in the Tournament of Power. Frieza even hijacks Sidra’s Energy of Destruction, and Roh doubts that Sidra could destroy him. Beerus judges an opening punch between True Golden Frieza and Super Saiyan Blue Goku a draw, although Frieza remains transformed while Goku drops out of Blue.

The manga acknowledges Frieza’s image training but does not use the anime’s “True Golden” label or its explanatory stamina speech. In manga continuity, the practical point is simply that Frieza returns stronger.

What is Black Frieza, and how did he become so strong?

Black Frieza debuts in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears,” released in Viz Media English coverage in August 2022. During a conquest, Frieza discovers a Hyperbolic Time Chamber (also called the Room of Spirit and Time or Room of Space and Time) on a conquered planet and trains inside for ten years.

CBR’s 2024 calculation places those ten chamber years at approximately ten real-world days. Because the chamber is separated from Universe 7, the wishes that made Granolah and Gas the strongest beings in the universe did not count Frieza.

Frieza arrives on Planet Cereal and kills the awakened Gas with one Ruthless Blow, then kills Elec. He unveils Black Frieza to True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta, knocking each out with one punch to the abdomen. He does not kill either Saiyan.

His introduction is deliberately understated: “I couldn’t very well keep losing to you Saiyans my whole life, so I needed a bit of a power-up. Meet Black Frieza. Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know.”

How strong is Black Frieza compared with Ultra Instinct?

Black Frieza is decisively above the versions of Goku and Vegeta present in chapter 87, but there is no official multiplier that converts the feat into a number. V-Jump in December 2023 describes the extent of Black Frieza’s power as “cannot be measured” and places it near God of Destruction territory. The same cited material says he is, by a notable margin, above Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Broly and Piccolo in their strongest forms.

The official-site interview surrounding Super volume 24, released in Japan on April 4, 2025, places the clustered strongest forms of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo and Broly on the cover while putting Black Frieza on the back because the power difference is the concern. Those statements establish a hierarchy, not a precise numerical gap.

Why is the form called Black Frieza?

Black Frieza keeps the white-and-purple torso and lower face of his natural body, while the lower body, neck, tail and arms turn black. Dark silver covers much of the head, hands, feet and limb guards; later colored art gives him a purple aura.

Toyotarou explained the color choice on Weekly Dragon Ball News on January 2, 2023: “We were talking about the top level of a credit card. The level above gold is black. I’m only half-joking. No matter how I look at it, it was the only choice.” The design is visually close to a recolor of Final Form, but the ten years of training and chapter 87 feats make it a distinct trained evolution rather than a cosmetic change.

Has Black Frieza been animated yet?

No. As of October 2026, Black Frieza remains a Dragon Ball Super manga character from the Granolah the Survivor arc. Reports from December 2025 and June 2026 still described the form as unanimated, and no Toei air date for a Granolah adaptation has been announced in the cited material.

The Golden Frieza storyline is available in the film, the Super anime and the manga, while Black Frieza can currently be read in chapter 87 and the surrounding manga volumes. Streaming availability for the anime varies by region, so check the current licensed catalog where you live.

Which Frieza forms are not part of the Super canon ladder?

Several names appear in games, promotional projects or films but should not be mixed into Frieza’s Super-era sequence:

  • Cooler’s Fifth Form (Fourth Transformation): a sibling-movie power-up used by Cooler, never by Frieza. At Black Frieza’s level, it would represent a step backward.
  • Golden Cooler and Golden Meta-Cooler: Heroes or promotional variants, not Frieza transformations.
  • Powered Up Frieza: a 1997 GT live-show form, not a television-series state.
  • Xenoverse forms: “Turn Golden,” Supervillain and Hi-Tension are game mechanics or variants, not the Super manga canon.

Why can Frieza improve so quickly?

Frieza is an unusually powerful mutant from his clan. Akira Toriyama described Frieza’s father as a mutant with abnormally high battle power and said Frieza was born from his father alone while retaining those mutant traits. That lineage explains why four months of training could create Golden Frieza and ten chamber years could produce Black Frieza, even though Frieza had previously relied almost entirely on innate strength.

The key progression is therefore not “small form to big form.” It is restraint, natural body, controlled output and then deliberate training. First through Third Form conserve power; Final Form reveals it; Golden learns to expand it; True Golden controls that expansion; Black Frieza applies a decade of focused training to surpass the strongest fighters alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Viz sometimes call him Freeza instead of Frieza?

Viz Media’s English localization commonly uses “Freeza,” while the title, anime subtitles and most current English reference material use “Frieza.” They refer to the same character and do not indicate separate continuities.

Which transformation is shown in Dragon Ball Super: Broly?

The film shows Frieza using his ordinary forms before activating Golden Frieza. It also refers to his Second Transformation, but Black Frieza does not appear because the form had not yet debuted in the manga.

Where does Black Frieza first appear in the manga?

His first appearance is chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears,” at the climax of the Granolah the Survivor storyline. The chapter is available in Viz Media’s English edition of Dragon Ball Super.

Is there an official multiplier for Black Frieza over Ultra Instinct Goku?

No published source gives a multiplier. Officially cited language says his power cannot be measured and describes a large gap, so percentage comparisons found online are fan estimates rather than canon figures.
