GOG Refund Policy Explained: Eligibility, Exceptions, and How to Request Your Money Back

Published 9 min read

GOG’s voluntary refund policy generally lets you request your money back within 30 days of purchase, even if you downloaded, launched, or played the game. Sign in, open Account → Order History, select the purchase, choose Ask for a refund, and select GOG Wallet funds or a return to the original payment method. GOG may refuse individual requests it considers policy misuse, so the 30-day window is an eligibility rule rather than an unconditional guarantee.

This guide reflects GOG’s published policy and help instructions checked October 30, 2026. It also separates GOG’s voluntary offer from statutory consumer rights, which can vary by country.

GOG refund eligibility at a glance

  • Standard request window: within 30 days after purchase.
  • Game status: downloading, launching, or playing does not automatically disqualify the request.
  • Refund destinations: GOG Wallet or the original payment method, where offered.
  • Important limitation: GOG says it may refuse refunds in individual cases where it believes the policy is being misused.
  • Separate rules: pre-orders, Wallet top-ups, gifts, packs, downloadable content, mission contributions, and purchases made on another platform have their own treatment.

How does GOG’s voluntary refund policy work?

GOG’s policy is a voluntary customer-service commitment that operates in addition to applicable statutory rights. For an ordinary qualifying game purchase, you can submit a request within 30 days of the purchase date. The policy does not require the game to remain unplayed or undownloaded.

GOG describes the 30 days as the period for making the request, not the period in which money must reach you. After approval, processing depends on the destination you select and the payment method involved. GOG can also decline an individual request when it considers the policy to be misused; no published approval-rate statistic establishes how often that occurs.

How do I refund a GOG game?

Use the account that placed the order and start from GOG’s own Order History page. Have access to the account email address, because GOG sends status messages there.

What you need before starting

  • Your GOG account sign-in.
  • The purchase must normally be within the 30-day voluntary-policy window.
  • The order must not be a free acquisition or an order that has already been refunded.
  • For a gift order, the purchaser—not the recipient—must deal with the refund request.

Request steps

  1. Open Order History. While signed in, go to https://www.gog.com/account/settings/orders, or navigate through Account → Order History.
  2. Locate the purchase. GOG says purchases made within the last 30 days are marked with a green shield in Order History.
  3. Choose “Ask for a refund.” The control appears beneath the purchase title when that order is eligible for the self-service route.
  4. Select a reason. Pick the closest reason from the dropdown. Choosing Other sends you to a support form where you can explain the circumstances.
  5. Choose the refund method. Select GOG Wallet funds or the offered return to your original payment method. The choices shown can depend on the order and payment route.
  6. Submit and save the confirmation. GOG says it sends a confirmation email after submission and another message after review. Check the account email’s spam or junk folder as well as its inbox.

GOG identifies [email protected] as the sender of purchase-related messages. A message from that address should still be checked against your account activity; do not provide account credentials in response to an unexpected email.

How long does a GOG refund take?

The request window and the processing period are different clocks. You must generally submit within 30 days of purchase, while the approved refund can take longer to arrive.

Refund destination Published processing estimate What it means
GOG Wallet Up to 24 hours to process Credit is placed in the GOG Wallet associated with the account.
Original payment method Up to 30 days, depending on the payment method The return follows the card, bank, or other payment provider’s settlement process.

These are GOG’s stated estimates, not independently measured averages. A payment provider can therefore make the elapsed time longer than the review period shown in your GOG account or email.

Can I refund a GOG game after playing or downloading it?

Yes. GOG says a request can still be made within 30 days after purchase even when the game was downloaded, launched, or played. That flexibility is unusual compared with policies that require no use, but it remains subject to GOG’s fair-use judgment.

Do not treat the policy as a way to finish a game and routinely recover its price. GOG’s published qualification is that it may refuse refunds in individual cases where it believes the policy is being misused.

What special rules apply to pre-orders, Early Access, Wallet top-ups, gifts, and DLC?

Pre-orders

A pre-order may be refunded before its official release without giving a reason under GOG’s help guidance. Once the title has released, the ordinary 30-day period is measured from the release-related purchase treatment described by GOG, so check the order’s available option rather than assuming the pre-release rule still applies.

Games in development and Early Access

GOG says games in development are covered for 30 days after purchase. Early Access status does not by itself remove the voluntary refund option during that period.

GOG Wallet top-ups

A Wallet top-up is different from choosing Wallet credit as the destination for a refunded game. Real-money Wallet funds may be requested back within 30 days only when none of those funds has been used. GOG also applies fair-use and payment-method limitations, so spending part of a top-up can prevent a full reversal of that top-up.

Gifts

If a gifted purchase is refunded, the cash or Wallet credit goes to the person who bought the gift, not the recipient. If the ordinary refund button is missing on a gift order, the purchaser should contact GOG support rather than telling the recipient to submit a standard account refund.

Packs and bundles

GOG says it cannot split a game pack for a partial refund. Refunding the pack removes the whole pack, so identify every item you intend to keep before submitting the request.

Separately purchased DLC

DLC bought separately may be refunded on its own. Separately purchased DLC linked to a base game that is refunded is also refunded under GOG’s stated policy.

Mission contributions and Patron payments

Voluntary contributions to a mission are generally non-refundable. Activated Patron payments are non-refundable as well, so these transactions should not be treated like ordinary game orders.

Purchases made on another platform

If you bought a game from another distribution platform and only activated it through GOG Direct to Account, the other platform handles the purchase and refund process. GOG’s voluntary policy does not cover that external sale.

Why is “Ask for a refund” missing in GOG Order History?

GOG lists three common explanations: the game was obtained for free, the order was already refunded, or the purchase belongs to a gift order.

  • Free acquisition: there is no paid transaction to reverse through the voluntary refund workflow.
  • Already refunded: the order no longer has an outstanding refund action.
  • Gift order: contact GOG support about the purchaser’s gift order; the recipient should not use the ordinary self-service path.

A missing button can also mean the purchase is outside the 30-day voluntary window or falls into a category with separate rules. Review the order date and item type before contacting support, and include the order details in the support form.

What if the game has a technical problem?

GOG recommends contacting technical support for troubleshooting when a game fails to work. Its help guidance says that if you contact support within 30 days and support cannot solve the issue, you will be offered a full refund.

That troubleshooting route is not the same as an absolute prerequisite for every voluntary refund request. If the problem is technical, provide useful details such as your operating system, the error message, and what happens when you launch the game; support can then determine whether a fix or refund is appropriate.

Can statutory consumer rights give me a different remedy?

Yes. GOG states that its voluntary policy is additional to statutory rights and does not replace them. The current User Agreement, effective March 9, 2026, describes a qualified 14-day withdrawal right for residents of the European Union and certain other applicable jurisdictions, while expressly excluding the USA from that specific provision.

The agreement also explains that starting delivery immediately with your express consent and acknowledgment can affect withdrawal rights. Other statutory remedies may apply depending on your country, the product, and the circumstances. Do not assume that the voluntary 30-day policy is the complete statement of your legal rights, or that every country uses the same rules.

How should I choose between Wallet credit and a payment-method refund?

Choose based on where you need the value and how quickly you expect to use it. Wallet credit is tied to the GOG account and has GOG’s stated processing estimate of up to 24 hours; a return to the original payment method can take up to 30 days depending on the provider.

Consideration GOG Wallet Original payment method
Where the money goes Your GOG Wallet The payment route used for the purchase, when available
GOG’s processing estimate Up to 24 hours Up to 30 days, depending on method
Best fit You expect to buy another GOG product soon You want the funds returned outside GOG

Before submitting, verify the selected destination on the review screen. Wallet credit for a game refund should not be confused with a refundable Wallet top-up; the latter has the separate “none of the funds used” condition.

What mistakes can delay or derail a request?

  • Waiting past 30 days: submit as soon as you decide, because the request deadline is not extended by a later support reply.
  • Using the recipient’s account for a gift: the purchaser owns the payment transaction and receives any refund.
  • Assuming a bundle can be split: GOG treats the pack as a whole for refund purposes.
  • Confusing an external activation with a GOG sale: request the refund from the platform that charged you.
  • Ignoring email filters: confirmation and review messages can land in spam.
  • Expecting an instant bank credit: GOG’s processing estimate does not override the payment provider’s settlement time.
  • Describing a Wallet top-up as a game refund: top-ups have their own usage restriction.

What should I check before submitting?

  1. Confirm the purchase date and whether the 30-day voluntary window is still open.
  2. Identify whether the transaction is a game, pre-order, Early Access item, gift, pack, DLC, Wallet top-up, mission contribution, or Patron payment.
  3. Confirm which account placed the order and which email address receives GOG messages.
  4. Decide whether Wallet credit or the original payment method suits your needs.
  5. Save the confirmation email and monitor the account email after submission.
  6. If the button is missing, use GOG support and explain the order type instead of repeatedly submitting unrelated forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a GOG refund automatically approved if I submit within 30 days?

No. The 30-day period makes a request timely under the voluntary policy, but GOG retains discretion to refuse an individual request it considers misuse. GOG does not publish a guaranteed approval rate.

Can I request a refund if I paid with a method that is no longer available?

The refund screen shows the destinations GOG can offer for that order. If the original route cannot receive funds, contact GOG support and explain the payment change rather than assuming Wallet credit will be substituted automatically.

Does a refund request cancel a pending download or installation?

Submitting a request does not itself describe a technical cancellation procedure. Stop using the product while the request is reviewed and follow any account or email instructions GOG sends for that order.

Where can I find the current GOG agreement that governs these rights?

Use GOG’s current User Agreement rather than an older downloadable agreement. GOG says the present agreement took effect March 9, 2026, and its statutory-rights section is separate from the voluntary refund policy.
