How to Get Minecraft for Free: 3 Legitimate Methods

October 26, 2026 11 min read

You cannot legally download a permanent, unrestricted copy of modern Minecraft: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition for free. You can, however, play official limited versions without paying: the Java demo, the Bedrock free trial, Minecraft Classic in a browser, and Minecraft Education demo lessons or an eligible organization trial. The first two are timed tests of the current game; Classic is a separate 2009-era browser release; Education is a classroom edition. This guide explains exactly how each option works, what it excludes, which account and device you need, and how to avoid fake “free Minecraft” downloads.

Is there a permanent free version of Minecraft Java or Bedrock?

No. Mojang and Microsoft do not offer the complete current Java or Bedrock editions as a permanently free download. The legitimate no-cost options are time-limited demos, the permanently accessible but very limited Minecraft Classic browser game, and Minecraft Education demo content or an organization-provided trial.

A website or launcher claiming to unlock the full paid game by bypassing Microsoft authentication is not a legal alternative. Cracked accounts, stolen credentials, license bypasses and unauthorized launchers can also expose your computer and account. Use the official Minecraft Launcher, the official Classic site or the official Education download instead.

The quickest way to choose is to decide whether you want to test modern survival, play an old browser version, or use classroom material:

Method What you actually get Typical limit Account or device requirement
Java Edition demo Current Java-style single-player Survival Five in-game days, about 100 real-time minutes Official Launcher and a Microsoft account that does not own Minecraft
Bedrock free trial Current Bedrock single-player Survival About 90 minutes, roughly four and a half in-game days Supported store platform; availability varies by region and platform
Minecraft Classic 2009-era browser Minecraft with 32 blocks No modern-game timer, but very limited features Desktop or laptop keyboard, WebGL and WebRTC-capable browser
Minecraft Education demo Replayable educational demo lessons Saving worlds and multiplayer are disabled Supported device; no account needed for the demo lesson
Minecraft Education trial Education edition for an eligible organization License and organization eligibility determine access Entra ID school or organization account

How do I use the official Minecraft Java Edition demo?

The Java demo is the closest free test of the modern PC game. It is single-player Survival for five in-game days, approximately 100 minutes of real time. Commands are disabled, ordinary online server multiplayer is unavailable, and the demo does not turn into a permanent license.

What you need

  • A Windows, macOS or Linux computer that can run the official Minecraft Launcher.
  • A Microsoft account that does not already own Minecraft.
  • The official launcher downloaded from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.

The demo is tied to the account used in the launcher. If that account owns Minecraft, the launcher should normally show the purchased edition rather than the demo.

Java demo setup

  1. Download and install the official Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Open the launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account you want to use.
  3. Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the launcher.
  4. On the Java Edition screen, choose the available demo option and start the game.
  5. Create a single-player Survival world and use the timed session to test movement, crafting, performance and basic survival.

The official support page documents the mode and its restrictions at Minecraft Java Edition Demo Mode.

What the Java demo does not allow

  • The approximately 100-minute allowance is total real-time play, not 100 minutes each day.
  • Commands are unavailable, so you cannot use cheats to change the world or grant items.
  • Standard online multiplayer servers are unavailable.
  • LAN play is heavily restricted: Mojang’s support documentation says only one demo account is permitted in the LAN game.
  • It is not the complete paid Java Edition and does not permanently unlock future updates or features.

Why is a purchased copy still showing as a demo?

If you paid for Java Edition but the launcher offers only a demo, first check the Microsoft account shown in the launcher. It must be the account used for the purchase. Other documented causes include an outdated launcher, a refunded transaction, a purchase that has not synchronized yet, or a Java profile name that has not been selected.

  1. Sign out of the launcher and sign back in with the purchasing account.
  2. Update the launcher to its current version.
  3. Confirm that the purchase was not refunded and that any required Java profile name is chosen.
  4. Restart the launcher after making the correction so the account entitlement can synchronize.

Those checks come from Mojang’s Java demo support guidance; do not install a third-party “unlocker” to work around an account problem.

How does the Minecraft Bedrock free trial work?

Bedrock’s free trial is another official test of the current game, but its exact availability depends on the supported platform and region. The trial provides about 90 minutes of play, equivalent to roughly four and a half in-game days, in single-player Survival.

Starting the trial

  1. Use the supported store for your gaming platform. On PC, open the official Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account that does not own Minecraft.
  3. Select Minecraft: Bedrock Edition when it is offered for your platform.
  4. Choose the free-trial option and launch a Survival world.

Platform and regional availability can change. The current restrictions are listed in What Is Minecraft Free Trial Mode?.

Bedrock trial restrictions

  • The allowance is approximately 90 real-time minutes, not an unlimited daily session.
  • Only single-player Survival is included.
  • Commands are disabled.
  • Multiplayer and Realms are unavailable.
  • Finishing the trial does not permanently unlock Bedrock.

This makes Bedrock’s trial useful for checking whether the game runs on your hardware or for trying the current survival loop, but not for hosting a shared world or joining friends online.

What to check when a purchased Bedrock copy remains in trial mode

If your account owns Bedrock but the launcher still limits you to the trial, Mojang lists four common causes: the wrong Microsoft account is signed in, a Game Pass subscription has expired, the Windows launcher needs repair, or the purchase has not synchronized.

  1. Verify the account email in the launcher against the account that bought Minecraft or holds the active subscription.
  2. If access came through Game Pass, confirm that the subscription is still active.
  3. Use Windows’ installed-app settings to repair the Minecraft Launcher, then reopen it.
  4. Sign out, restart the launcher and sign in again to force an entitlement refresh.

How can I play Minecraft Classic free in a browser?

Minecraft Classic is the only option here that remains available without a modern-game timer, but it is not the current Minecraft. It is an official browser recreation of the 2009-era release, with just 32 building blocks, early mechanics and the bugs and limitations of that period.

Classic access steps

  1. Use a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard.
  2. Open classic.minecraft.net in a current browser.
  3. Allow the page to run the game.
  4. Play directly in the browser; no modern launcher installation is required.

The Classic page specifically requires keyboard input and browser support for WebGL and WebRTC. If either technology is unavailable, the page can show an error instead of loading.

What Classic includes

  • A small set of 32 blocks rather than the extensive modern block catalog.
  • The original early-game mechanics and interface.
  • Historical bugs and technical limitations.
  • Browser-based play rather than the current Java or Bedrock launcher.

Classic does not open modern worlds, Marketplace content, Realms or current Java/Bedrock multiplayer features. It is a separate browser release, not a free license for either paid edition.

Device and compatibility edge cases

Phones and tablets may fail because the official page requires a keyboard; touchscreen-only controls are not promised. A browser without WebGL or WebRTC will not run the game even if the device is otherwise powerful enough. If Classic will not load, try a desktop browser with those technologies enabled rather than downloading an unofficial copy.

Can I use Minecraft Education for free?

Minecraft Education is a separate edition built for schools, educators, camps, clubs and other organizations. It provides two legitimate no-cost routes: demo lessons that do not require an account, and a trial for eligible organization accounts. Neither route gives you the ordinary consumer Java or Bedrock editions.

Option A: play a demo lesson without an account

  1. Download and install Minecraft Education for your device from the official Minecraft Education download page.
  2. Launch the application.
  3. At the Welcome to Minecraft Education screen, select If you don’t have an account, try a demo lesson.
  4. Choose a lesson and start it.

Demo lessons can be replayed, but saving worlds and multiplayer are disabled. The download page currently lists Windows, Chromebook, Android, Mac and iPhone/iPad support, and displays version 1.21.133 at the time of writing. Education updates can change that version number, so use the page’s current installer rather than an archived download.

Option B: use an eligible organization trial

The trial requires an Entra ID account, such as an Office 365 Education account or another eligible Microsoft 365 organization account. A personal Outlook, Gmail or personal Microsoft 365 account does not qualify.

  1. Install Minecraft Education on a supported device.
  2. Launch it and choose the sign-in option.
  3. Enter the school or organization account, often the institution-issued email address.
  4. If the account is eligible, follow the on-screen trial or license instructions.

Some schools already provide Minecraft Education through a Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 subscription. In that case, the school’s IT administrator controls whether your account receives a license; downloading the app alone cannot create access. Requirements and administrator guidance are listed at Minecraft Education for IT Admins.

Education sign-in and network problems

  • A personal account may sign in successfully to Microsoft services but still be ineligible for the Education trial.
  • A school account can be eligible in principle yet lack an assigned Minecraft Education license.
  • School filtering can block authentication, multiplayer or the lesson library.
  • The demo lesson is not unrestricted Survival, a normal Java/Bedrock world or ordinary consumer multiplayer.

For a description of the edition’s purpose and features, see What Is Minecraft Education?.

Which free method should I choose?

Your goal Best match Why
Try current Java mechanics on a computer Java demo It uses the Java Edition launcher and gives roughly 100 minutes of Survival play.
Try current Bedrock on a supported console or PC Bedrock trial It tests the platform version, but remains single-player and time-limited.
Build casually without buying the modern game Minecraft Classic It is accessible in a browser, although the 32-block toolset is extremely limited.
Follow a guided lesson Education demo lesson You can replay lessons without an account, but cannot save worlds or use multiplayer.
Use Education through school Organization trial or school license An eligible Entra ID account and administrator assignment determine access.

Java and Bedrock demos are best treated as timed evaluations. Classic is better for nostalgia or a quick browser building session. Education is appropriate when the content is supplied by a school, club or other organization rather than when you want the consumer game.

Does Game Pass give Minecraft to me permanently?

No. Xbox lists Minecraft as available through Game Pass while the subscription is active. That is subscription access, not permanent ownership; if the subscription expires, the entitlement associated with it can disappear. A Game Pass entitlement can also be the reason a purchased Bedrock installation unexpectedly falls back to trial mode, so check the subscription status when troubleshooting.

Game Pass is therefore a paid access route, not one of the three free methods in this guide. It does not change the restrictions of the official demos or turn Classic and Education into the consumer editions.

Which common “free Minecraft” claims are false?

“The Java demo is unlimited.”

It is limited to five in-game days, approximately 100 minutes of real time. The timer is not renewed every day.

“The Bedrock trial has commands and multiplayer.”

The official trial is single-player Survival only. Commands, multiplayer and Realms are disabled.

“Minecraft Classic is the complete game.”

Classic is the 2009 browser version with 32 blocks and early mechanics. It does not unlock current Java or Bedrock.

“Minecraft Education is normal Minecraft.”

Education is a separate classroom-focused edition with demo lessons and organization-based licensing. Its content and account rules differ from the consumer editions.

“A cracked launcher creates a free license.”

It does not. A third-party launcher cannot legitimately grant a Java or Bedrock entitlement. Avoid downloads asking for stolen credentials, disabled authentication or license bypasses.

How do I stay safe while looking for a free trial?

  • Use only the official Minecraft Launcher, classic.minecraft.net or Minecraft Education’s official download page.
  • Check that the browser address is correct before entering a Microsoft password.
  • Never reuse your Microsoft password on a launcher or website that promises an unlocked account.
  • Do not disable antivirus, account security or authentication to make a “free” copy run.
  • Remember that a demo, trial or browser release is not evidence that the paid edition has been licensed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a Java or Bedrock demo world into the paid game?

The official demo documentation describes the time limit and feature restrictions but does not promise world migration or a saved-world entitlement. Treat the demo as a temporary test and do not rely on it as a long-term backup; make a separate copy of any files you create if the launcher exposes them.

Why does Minecraft Education ask for a school email when the demo lesson is free?

The no-account lesson and the organization trial are different paths. The lesson can be started from the Welcome screen without signing in, while the broader trial checks an Entra ID school or organization account and any license assigned by its administrator.

What should I do if Classic reports that my browser is unsupported?

Check that you are using a desktop or laptop with a keyboard and a browser that supports both WebGL and WebRTC. A phone, tablet or browser with either technology unavailable may fail even though the site itself is official.

Can I host a Realm from any of the free options?

No free option in this guide provides a consumer Realm. The Bedrock trial explicitly disables Realms, Java’s demo has no standard online server multiplayer, and Education demo lessons disable multiplayer.
