PlayStation PULSE Explore: Supported Devices and Key Limitations

Published 9 min read

PlayStation PULSE Explore wireless earbuds officially support PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, Mac and Bluetooth phones or tablets. PS4 is not on Sony’s compatibility list, although RTINGS and Trusted Reviews report that the included PlayStation Link USB transmitter delivers audio and microphone support there. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are a hard no: there is no 3.5 mm connection, Xbox Wireless support or working USB headset path. Nintendo Switch use is also unofficial; CNET used the PlayStation Link adapter with a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. iPhone and Android pairing is supported, and a dual-device mode can keep PS Link game audio active while Bluetooth handles a call or music.

Which platforms are officially supported?

Sony’s product and support pages name five categories: PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, Mac and mobile phones or tablets. PlayStation Link is the gaming connection, while ordinary Bluetooth is intended for mobile devices. Sony also warns that “Not all devices work with your earbuds,” so an unlisted Bluetooth product should not be treated as guaranteed compatibility.

PS5 and PS5 Slim

The earbuds are designed for PS5. Plug the included USB-A PlayStation Link adapter into an available USB-A port, then remove the earbuds from their case. Supported PS5 games can use the console’s 3D Audio processing. PS5 Slim models remain in the PS5 compatibility category; use the same included adapter and an available USB-A port.

PlayStation Portal

Portal has PlayStation Link built in. The earbuds connect directly when they are removed from the case near a powered Portal, so no USB transmitter is needed.

PC and Mac

On either computer platform, the USB adapter provides the lossless, low-latency PlayStation Link connection. Windows users can install the PlayStation Link PC Driver from the system-tray icon and select “PlayStation Link Adapter” as the audio device if Windows does not switch automatically. Bluetooth also works on compatible computers, but reviewers recommend PlayStation Link for games because Bluetooth latency is much higher.

Do PULSE Explore work with PS4?

They may work, but this is not official Sony support. Sony’s current product, shop and support pages omit PS4. RTINGS reports full audio and microphone compatibility with PS4 and PS5 through the wireless transmitter, and Trusted Reviews likewise says the included USB-A dongle is used to connect to PS4 or PS5. TechRadar’s specification table does not list PS4, so treat the result as reviewer evidence rather than a promise about every console revision or future firmware.

For the reported setup, connect the supplied PlayStation Link adapter to a PS4 USB-A port, turn on the console and take the earbuds from their case. The reviewers’ compatibility reports include both game audio and microphone chat. If a PS4 does not recognize the adapter, check that the transmitter is seated, restart the console with it attached and verify that the earbuds are charged; Sony does not publish a PS4 troubleshooting path or guarantee.

Do PULSE Explore work with Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?

No. RTINGS records no usable Xbox analog, wired-USB or non-Bluetooth wireless path. The earbuds are wireless-only and have no 3.5 mm jack for an Xbox controller. PlayStation Link is Sony’s proprietary radio, not Xbox Wireless, and the included USB adapter is not an Xbox-licensed USB headset. Bluetooth game audio is not a supported Xbox console route for this model.

Do not buy these earbuds expecting a firmware update or a cable workaround to add Xbox support. If Xbox is a required platform, choose a headset that explicitly lists Xbox One and Series X|S and provides either Xbox Wireless, a compatible USB connection or a 3.5 mm plug.

Do PULSE Explore work with Nintendo Switch?

Only as an unofficial adapter setup. Nintendo Switch is absent from Sony’s compatibility list. CNET executive editor David Carnoy reported using the PlayStation Link USB adapter with Switch and noted that handheld use requires a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. That is an editorial test, not an official guarantee, and the available sources do not independently confirm Bluetooth pairing for this specific model on Switch.

For a trial, connect the PlayStation Link transmitter to a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, plug that assembly into the Switch’s USB-C port and select the adapter as the console’s audio output if prompted. Because Sony does not list Switch, compatibility can vary by adapter, console mode and firmware. If Switch support must be dependable, TechRadar lists Sony INZONE Buds as supporting PS5, PS4, PC, Switch and mobile, while SteelSeries Tusq is a wired 3.5 mm option listed for PS5, PS4, Xbox consoles, Switch, PC and mobile.

Can I use PULSE Explore with an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Bluetooth pairing is officially supported on phones and tablets. SoundGuys confirms iPhone and Android compatibility with SBC and AAC codecs. Bluetooth 5.3 is reported by SoundGuys and RTINGS; a conflicting retailer sheet lists Bluetooth 5.0, so 5.3 is the better-supported specification.

The earbuds are less complete as phone-first earbuds than many mainstream models. They have no active noise cancellation, no LDAC, no wear-detection pause and no companion phone EQ app. CNET found no track-skip controls and no working onboard volume control over Bluetooth; use the phone’s volume buttons instead. The microphones can suppress background noise for calls, although recording quality varies by use case.

How do you connect the earbuds to each device?

Have the charging case charged, both earbuds inside it and the required USB-A or USB-C adapter ready. The PlayStation Link transmitter is pre-paired out of the box.

PS5, PC or Mac with PlayStation Link

  1. Insert the PlayStation Link USB-A adapter into the PS5, PC or Mac.
  2. Remove both earbuds from the case.
  3. Wait for the adapter indicator to turn solid white.
  4. On Windows, install the PlayStation Link PC Driver from the tray icon if prompted, then choose “PlayStation Link Adapter” in the sound settings.

PlayStation Portal

  1. Turn on Portal and keep it near the charging case.
  2. Remove the earbuds; Portal’s built-in PlayStation Link radio handles the connection.
  3. No USB dongle or USB-C adapter is required.

iPhone or Android over Bluetooth

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
  2. Put both earbuds in the charging case.
  3. Hold the PlayStation Link button on the case for about eight seconds, until the indicator flashes blue quickly.
  4. Select “PULSE Explore” in the phone’s Bluetooth list.
  5. A solid blue indicator confirms pairing. Adjust listening volume on the phone, not the earbud rocker.

The earbuds can remember up to 10 Bluetooth devices, but Sony says they can connect to and play from only one Bluetooth device at a time.

PS4 or Switch

  1. Use the included PlayStation Link USB-A transmitter.
  2. For PS4, insert it directly into a USB-A port and allow the console to detect it.
  3. For Switch handheld mode, add a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter before connecting the transmitter.
  4. Because neither platform is Sony-listed, regard successful detection as conditional rather than guaranteed.

Can the earbuds connect to PlayStation Link and Bluetooth simultaneously?

Yes. Sony designed dual-device operation so PS Link can carry game audio while Bluetooth carries a phone call or music. Sony states that simultaneous Bluetooth audio does not increase PlayStation Link latency.

The volume rocker on the earbuds changes only PS Link audio. When Bluetooth is active, phone volume remains under the phone’s control. You can pair the earbuds with up to eight PlayStation Link USB adapters, but they play from only one adapter at a time; one adapter can remember up to eight PlayStation Link devices. Older CFI-ZWA2 adapters require current firmware, while CFI-ZWA3 has a swappable connector.

What are the battery, audio and microphone limitations?

  • Battery: Sony rates the earbuds for up to five hours, with up to an additional 10 hours from the charging case. CNET notes that the five-hour figure is at moderate volume. How-To Geek lists approximately 40 minutes for a case charge.
  • Drivers: Planar magnetic drivers are used, with 3D Audio available on supported PS5 games.
  • Noise control: There is no active noise cancellation. Sony’s AI-enhanced noise rejection applies to the microphones and your outgoing voice, not to blocking room noise for you.
  • Microphones: CNET reported strong call clarity and background suppression in noisy streets, while RTINGS found sub-par game-chat recording with occasional distortion. Those are different use cases, so neither result should be generalized to every environment.
  • Bluetooth gaming: RTINGS records 265 ms Bluetooth SBC latency, and SoundGuys does not recommend Bluetooth mode for gaming. Use PlayStation Link when timing matters.
  • Weight: PlayStation UK lists approximately 77 g for the case and both earbuds; TechRadar lists about 6.5 g per earbud with a medium tip.

What do PULSE Explore cost?

Prices vary by country, color and retailer. The figures below were checked in November 2026 and are not guarantees of a current checkout price.

PULSE Explore price references (checked Nov 2026)
Listing Price Qualification
Typical retail $199.99 TechRadar (2024) and IGN (2026)
Midnight Black on PlayStation Direct $149.00 Sony listing; release date February 20, 2025
Amazon street price $128.03 IGN, October 26, 2026; 36% below $199.99 and volatile
PlayStation UK retail £154.99 UK product-page price
Additional PlayStation Link adapter $24.00 PlayStation Direct listing; useful for separate PS5 and PC setups

The package includes the earbuds, charging case, PlayStation Link USB adapter, USB cable, carrying case, user manual and eight earbud tips. Models are identified as CFI-ZWE1 and CFI-ZWE1EC, and the earbuds are sold in the original white finish and Midnight Black.

Who should buy PULSE Explore?

Choose them when your main combination is PS5 or Portal plus a PC, Mac or phone. PlayStation Link gives the gaming latency and console integration that ordinary Bluetooth cannot, while dual-device mode is useful for taking calls without abandoning a game.

Choose something else when Xbox support is essential, when Switch compatibility must be official, or when phone features such as ANC, wear detection, app EQ and Bluetooth volume controls are priorities. For a multi-platform household, compare the connection type, microphone support, latency, adapter requirements, noise control, battery and price rather than assuming every “wireless” headset works everywhere.

How we picked the compatibility verdicts

The platform labels follow Sony’s published compatibility list first. Where Sony is silent, the article separates independent reviewer reports from official support: RTINGS and Trusted Reviews for PS4, and CNET’s adapter-based Switch report. Xbox is marked incompatible because the available connection methods provide no supported console path.

Frequently Asked Questions

What model numbers identify the PlayStation earbuds?

The current PULSE Explore hardware is identified as CFI-ZWE1 or CFI-ZWE1EC. They are sold in the original white finish and a Midnight Black version released on February 20, 2025.

Can PULSE Explore pair with a Bluetooth television?

A television with a compatible Bluetooth audio transmitter may discover them, but Sony’s official list names phones and tablets rather than TVs. Sony’s warning that not all devices work with the earbuds means television pairing should be treated as device-specific, not guaranteed.

Do the earbuds include different ear-tip sizes?

The PlayStation Direct package list specifies eight earbud tips, covering multiple fit options. Exact fit and seal still affect comfort, microphone pickup and passive isolation.

Can I leave one PlayStation Link adapter in my console and another in my computer?

Yes. The earbuds can be paired with up to eight PlayStation Link USB adapters, which lets a household keep separate adapters connected. Playback still comes from only one adapter at a time, so switching requires selecting the desired connected system.
