The Best Camera and Keybind Setup for Controlling Fast Mounts in WoW: Forever

Published 9 min read

Use Never for Camera Following Style, put A and D on strafe, and turn with the right mouse button. Then maximize camera distance, set Camera FOV to 90, disable camera effects that move your view, and bind your mount to a mouse side button, tilde, or another key outside your movement cluster. That combination addresses the two reasons a 100% mount feels slippery: the camera recenters when you press W, and keyboard turning rotates too slowly.

Forever has no flying mounts. “High-speed” therefore means the 60% ground mounts unlocked with Apprentice Riding (Riding 75) and the 100% ground mounts unlocked with Journeyman Riding (Riding 150). The menu labels below come from the 2026 beta and Blizzard’s 28 October starter guide, so check them again when the global launch arrives on 4 November 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC).

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Keyboard and mouse Fast ground travel and precise look-around Never follow; A/D strafe; right-mouse turn; FOV 90 Windows, Mac Oct 2026
Gamepad Players who prefer analog movement Face Movement While Mounted enabled; Follow Camera disabled Windows, Mac; controller support beta Oct 2026

Why do 60% and 100% mounts feel difficult to steer?

Forever keeps Classic’s two ground-speed tiers but presents them through a modern client. Apprentice Riding (Riding 75) enables 60% mounts; Journeyman Riding (Riding 150) enables 100% mounts. A 100% mount crosses terrain quickly enough that a camera which snaps behind you, head-bob, slope tilt and slow keyboard turning all arrive at the same moment.

There is no flying, dragonriding or mount-speed slider to configure. Blizzard’s travel guidance is explicit: “You’ll feel that philosophy throughout the world: no flying mounts, no level scaling, and a continued focus on challenge, preparation, communication, and cooperation.” The practical solution is a camera-and-input setup, not a hidden mount option.

ForeverDB’s client data lists 141 mounts, including 39 new ones. Most 60% mounts are listed at 20 gold and most 100% mounts at 200 gold, compared with Classic’s typical 80-gold and 1000-gold prices. Players therefore reach the faster tier earlier in their progression than a returning Classic player may remember.

What should I change first for keyboard-and-mouse control?

Make these changes before rearranging combat abilities. They preserve W, A, S, D and right-mouse look as a dedicated movement system.

  1. Set Camera Following Style to Never. Open Escape > Options and find Controls, then Camera. “Always” or “Only when moving” can pull the view behind you as soon as W is pressed. Never lets you look to the side while continuing forward. Arwoht’s beginner guide calls this “Never adjust camera”; Method’s Jurdi describes it as the first change to make.
  2. Maximize Max Camera Distance. Move the in-game slider to its maximum (commonly displayed as 2). A wider view gives earlier warning of cliffs, mobs and corners.
  3. Set Camera FOV to 90. This is the widest value recommended by the current Forever camera guides.
  4. Turn off visual movement effects. Disable Head Bob, Follow Terrain and Water Collision. If your client exposes a general camera-shake option, disable that too. These effects can pitch or bounce the view just as a fast mount reaches a slope or shoreline.
  5. Choose a Smart Pivot policy. Onlyfarms leaves Smart Pivot enabled for a natural orbit. Broog disables it so the camera never assists. For the most repeatable mounted look-around, pair Never with Smart Pivot off; use the enabled option if you prefer the camera’s gentle orbit.
  6. Set mouse look speed to 4.0–6.0. This range is fast enough to yaw through a 100% turn without becoming difficult to place precisely. Leave Invert Mouse disabled unless you already use an inverted layout.
  7. Disable Click-to-Move. A mistaken ground click should not send a mount charging in that direction.

With this setup, hold W to travel, hold the right mouse button and move the mouse to turn, and use A or D to slide sideways without rotating. Releasing the mouse button leaves the camera where you placed it instead of snapping forward.

How do I change A and D from turning to strafing?

In Escape > Options > Keybindings, remove Turn Left and Turn Right from A and D. Assign Strafe Left to A and Strafe Right to D, while keeping Move Forward on W and Move Backward on S. Turn with right-mouse movement rather than keyboard rotation. Arwoht summarizes the reason directly: “You never want to use A and D to turn left or right because this takes too much time.”

Forever’s first-login presets explain why players see different defaults. Classic is “Defaulted to camera turning keyboard binds”; Enhanced is “Defaulted strafe movement to keyboard binds.” Blizzard says, “If you are not sure which to choose, start with Enhanced. The preset gives you a convenient starting point rather than locking in your choices, and you can change its individual settings later under Game Menu > Options.” Choosing Classic does not lock the character into turning; rebind A and D afterward.

Do not assign the mount to a key you use for strafe. Some custom layouts put strafe on Q and E; if so, those keys must remain movement keys while mounted. Taking one away for an ability or mount removes the lateral control that makes fast travel manageable.

Where should I put the mount key?

Use a key you can press without releasing W or the right-mouse button. A mouse side button is the cleanest single-press option. On the keyboard, tilde (~) or an unused key in the WASD neighborhood such as Z, X or V keeps the mount close without consuming A/D.

Arwoht’s keybind map places frequently pressed abilities around 1–4, Q, E, R, F and C, with 5, T, G, V, Z and X as good secondary choices. F1–F4, 6, Y, H and B are less convenient. These are ergonomic suggestions, not Forever defaults. C commonly opens the Character Panel, so rebind that panel if you take C for another action.

Forever’s Quick Keybind Mode makes the assignment quick: hover the action-bar mount button, press the desired key, then save. Bindings can be character-specific. Extra action bars are available under the Action Bar options if you need a separate travel row.

Should I use optional camera CVars?

Only after the in-game settings work. These are community commands, not Blizzard-published recommended values, and they may be clamped or reset in the launch client.

Command Reported effect Qualification
/console cameraDistanceMaxZoomFactor 2.6 Zooms beyond the normal slider 1mw.io calls the syntax standard but says to verify in game
/console cameraDistanceMaxZoomFactor 4 More aggressive zoom than 2.6 Broog’s value; unofficial and potentially clamped
/console cameraZoomSpeed 50 Faster wheel zoom Community CVar
/console cameraBobbing 0 Removes running bounce Community CVar
/console cameraSmoothStyle 0 Reduces automatic swing behind the character Community CVar
/console cameraTerrainTilt 0 Stops slope and stair tilt Community CVar
/console rawMouseEnable 1 Uses raw mouse input without Windows pointer acceleration Community CVar

There is a genuine disagreement over zoom: 1mw.io uses 2.6, while Broog uses 4; the in-game slider commonly tops out at 2. Max the slider first, try 2.6, and only try 4 if you still need more height. Recheck every command after 4 November 2026. To persist commands, 1mw.io recommends closing the game and adding SET lines to WTFConfig.wtf; keep the file writable and outside a cloud-sync folder.

What does the Enhanced preset change?

Enhanced is the better starting point for a fast-mount setup because its movement default is strafe. The first-login choice also controls character-model quality, quest objective indicators, one-bag mode, transmog and UI layout. Classic uses camera-turning binds and the classic versions of those presentation features. None is permanent: use Game Menu > Options after logging in.

Blizzard’s starter guide states, “You can play on Windows or Mac with a keyboard and mouse. Controller support is also available in a beta state for players who prefer a gamepad.” Pick Enhanced if you want the recommended A/D behavior immediately; pick Classic only if you deliberately want the old turning layout.

Which gamepad settings help mounted movement?

Enable Face Movement While Mounted. It is the only Forever option whose name specifically addresses mounted facing, and it makes the mount turn toward your movement direction. Disable Follow Camera so the view does not pan independently of your stick input.

Gamepad option Recommended value Purpose
Enable Gamepad UI On Switches to the controller interface
Face Movement While Mounted Enabled Mount faces travel direction
Face Movement While Swimming Enabled Applies the same behavior in water
Follow Camera Disabled Keeps camera movement under your control
Movement Face Angle 0 Direct facing while exploring
Movement Face Angle Combat 105 Allows freer combat kiting
Horizontal Speed 1.3 Quicker yaw
Vertical Speed 1.0 Calmer pitch
Stick Run Threshold 0.5 Sets walk-to-run point
Back Pedal Stick Threshold 0.6 Reduces accidental reverse movement
HUD Modifier Press to Toggle Disabled Requires holding modifiers

Gamepad support remains beta, and community guides advise trying the layout in the open world before a dungeon. Forever HQ’s controller demo used eight face/D-pad positions and three trigger layers: 8 × 3 = 24 trigger-modified positions on one action-bar page. Put the mount on a layer reachable without releasing the left stick for movement or right stick for camera control.

How do I save and move the setup?

  1. Change camera and keybind options, then log out once so the client writes them.
  2. Account-level files are under WTFAccount<id>bindings-cache.wtf and config-cache.wtf; character folders can contain overrides.
  3. Do not copy a beta Config.wtf from _classic_beta_ if it still names test realms. Set graphics manually instead. Copy binding and configuration cache files only when you understand which settings are account-wide.
  4. For UI layouts, use Escape > Edit Mode > Share > Copy to Clipboard, then Import on the live client.

Beta menus can change: the beta closed on 23 October 2026, and launch is 4 November. If a label moved, use the Options search bar for “camera,” “strafe,” or “mounted.”

How we picked these settings

The setup follows the controls that directly affect steering: camera-follow behavior, view distance, visual motion, A/D movement, right-mouse turning, mount-key reach and the gamepad’s mounted-facing toggle. It separates Blizzard’s preset and controller documentation from community recommendations, labels unofficial CVars as unverified, and preserves both Smart Pivot approaches instead of presenting a disputed value as official.

FAQ

Can I keep the Classic preset and still use strafe?

Yes. The preset only supplies starting bindings and presentation choices. Open Game Menu > Options > Keybindings after your first login and assign Strafe Left and Strafe Right to A and D manually.

Why does my camera still move after I choose Never?

Check Smart Pivot, Follow Terrain, head bob and camera-shake options separately. A community CVar may also be restoring smoothing or terrain tilt, so remove the CVar and log out once before diagnosing the in-game setting.

Will a 100% mount always require a mouse?

No. A gamepad can work with Face Movement While Mounted enabled and Follow Camera disabled. Controller support is beta, however, so sensitivity and face-angle values may need adjustment for your controller and layout.

Do Forever mounts use items or riding skills?

Forever’s client teaches mounts through the mount entry, while riding progression supplies the speed tier and a type skill such as Horse Riding or Galestrider Riding. This differs from Classic’s item-based presentation.
