What Is Soul Speed in Minecraft and Why Is It Useful?

October 26, 2026 8 min read

Soul Speed is a treasure enchantment for boots that increases your movement speed while you walk on soul sand or soul soil. It is most valuable in the Nether, where those blocks are common and normally slow you down. The enchantment has three levels (I, II and III), but it also gives the boots a 4% chance to lose one durability point for every compatible block you step on. Unbreaking and Mending make that cost manageable.

Soul Speed is available in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. In survival you obtain it mainly by bartering with piglins or finding it in bastion remnants, then apply a book to boots with an anvil.

What does Soul Speed do?

Soul Speed changes the player’s walking speed only when the boots are worn and the player is standing on soul sand or soul soil. It does not make you faster on grass, stone, netherrack or any other ordinary block. A block is not compatible merely because its name contains the word “soul”; the enchantment checks specifically for soul sand and soul soil. Microsoft’s enchantment documentation describes the effect and its Nether use in detail: Minecraft Bedrock enchantment guide.

The effect applies while walking across a surface, so it is useful for crossing terrain, building routes and escaping hazards on foot. It does not grant a separate ability, alter your controls or speed up movement on unrelated surfaces.

How many levels of Soul Speed are there?

There are three legal levels. Level III is the maximum level in normal gameplay and in the Bedrock command reference.

Level What it does Maximum?
Soul Speed I Increases walking speed on soul sand and soul soil. No
Soul Speed II Provides a stronger speed increase on those two blocks than level I. No
Soul Speed III Provides the strongest available Soul Speed effect. Yes

The official Bedrock command documentation lists soul_speed with levels 1, 2 and 3: Bedrock /enchant command reference. Guides claiming a normal Soul Speed IV or V are describing commands, modifications or errors rather than a standard enchantment level.

Why is Soul Speed useful in the Nether?

Soul sand and soul soil occur throughout Nether terrain and are especially common in soul sand valley biomes. Both blocks normally slow a player, making long crossings, fortress approaches and routes between portals tedious and risky. Soul Speed turns those patches into fast-walkable ground, so a Nether path built from either block can be crossed without the usual slowdown.

Travel and route building

Use Soul Speed boots when scouting for structures, connecting portals or laying a route through a soul sand valley. A path made from soul soil is compatible just like one made from soul sand. Ordinary blocks can be mixed into the route, but the speed bonus returns only when your feet are on one of the two compatible blocks.

When the enchantment provides no benefit

There is no speed increase on normal Nether blocks or in the Overworld. Soul fire, soul torches, soul lanterns and other blocks with “soul” in their names are not substitutes for soul sand or soul soil. If your route contains those blocks instead, the boots behave like ordinary enchanted boots.

What is the durability drawback?

While Soul Speed boots are worn, each compatible block stepped on gives the boots a 4% chance to lose one durability point. This chance is checked per block, not once per trip, so a long soul-sand crossing can consume durability even when no enemies attack you. The loss is random: several adjacent blocks may cause damage, or a stretch may cause none.

That durability cost is the enchantment’s principal drawback. Monitor the boot durability bar before a long journey and carry a spare pair when exploring far from a portal.

How Unbreaking and Mending help

  • Unbreaking reduces how often durability is actually removed when a durability-loss check occurs.
  • Mending uses experience orbs you collect to repair the boots, allowing regular Nether travel without continually replacing them.

Combining Soul Speed with both enchantments is the practical way to keep a dedicated Nether pair in service. The relevant enchantment behavior is documented by Microsoft and summarized in the Soul Speed reference: Microsoft’s enchantment documentation and Soul Speed reference.

How do you get Soul Speed in survival?

Soul Speed is a treasure enchantment, so an enchanting table does not normally offer it. Survival players obtain it through special loot or piglin bartering rather than by rolling ordinary table enchantments. The Bedrock enchantment list identifies Soul Speed as treasure: Bedrock enchantment list.

Piglin bartering

  1. Enter the Nether with gold ingots and protect yourself from hostile mobs.
  2. Give a gold ingot to a piglin. In Java Edition this is done by dropping the ingot near the piglin or using it on the piglin; use the normal interaction for your edition.
  3. Collect the random item it returns. A possible result is a Soul Speed enchanted book or Soul Speed iron boots.

Bartering is random, not a guaranteed Soul Speed trade. Each ingot is a separate attempt, so plan to spend enough gold for multiple trades rather than expecting the first piglin to provide the enchantment.

Bastion remnant loot

Soul Speed books and Soul Speed boots can also appear in chests inside bastion remnants. Bastions are dangerous Nether structures, so bring fire-resistance supplies, blocks and a way to retreat before searching them. Chest contents are not guaranteed; finding a bastion does not ensure that Soul Speed will be present.

Why a librarian is not the normal source

In vanilla survival, repeatedly breaking and replacing a librarian’s lectern is not a reliable way to obtain Soul Speed. Current enchantment references treat Soul Speed as a treasure enchantment, and guides recommending librarian rerolling for this book are outdated or incorrect for standard Minecraft.

How do you put Soul Speed on boots?

Once you have a Soul Speed book, use an anvil to combine it with an eligible pair of boots. The current Bedrock enchantment guide identifies the anvil as the method for combining an item and an enchanted book.

  1. Craft or locate an anvil and place it.
  2. Put the boots in the anvil’s first slot.
  3. Put the Soul Speed book in the second slot.
  4. Check the experience-level cost shown by the anvil and take the output if you can pay it.
  5. Equip the resulting boots before entering soul sand or soul soil.

The target item must be boots. A Soul Speed book cannot normally be applied to a helmet, chestplate, leggings, weapon, tool or other non-boot item. The enchantment can be placed on an eligible pair of boots rather than being restricted to one material, provided the anvil accepts the combination.

What are the Java Edition commands for Soul Speed?

Java Edition’s /enchant command applies an enchantment to the item held by the target. Hold the boots in your hand and run:

/enchant <targets> minecraft:soul_speed <level>

For level III on yourself, use:

/enchant @s minecraft:soul_speed 3

The target must be holding an eligible item. A command will fail if you hold a non-boot item or use a level outside the normal range. Commands are intended for worlds with cheats or command permissions enabled.

What are the Bedrock Edition commands for Soul Speed?

Bedrock uses the registered enchantment name soul_speed and applies the enchantment to the target player’s selected item (the item in the active hotbar slot). Put the boots in that slot first, then run:

/enchant <player> soul_speed [level]

For yourself at level III:

/enchant @s soul_speed 3

The exact Bedrock command form is /enchant <player: target> <enchantmentName: Enchant> [level: int]. Bedrock accepts Soul Speed levels 1, 2 or 3 and requires cheats to be enabled. If the boots are merely somewhere in your inventory, the command will not select them; move them to the active slot before executing it. See the official syntax and permission requirements at Microsoft’s Bedrock /enchant reference.

Is Soul Speed available in both Java and Bedrock?

Yes. Current Java and Bedrock documentation recognizes Soul Speed, and the current Bedrock command reference explicitly lists soul_speed with levels 1–3. The Bedrock enchantment guide also describes its movement effect, so a claim that the enchantment is Java-only is not current.

An older Minecraft Help page still contains a statement that Soul Speed is available only in Java Edition: Minecraft Help enchantment article. That statement conflicts with the current Bedrock command and enchantment documentation linked above; use the current Bedrock references when playing Bedrock Edition.

How do you troubleshoot Soul Speed?

The player is not moving faster

  • Confirm that the boots are equipped, not merely in your inventory.
  • Check the block under your feet. Only soul sand and soul soil activate the effect.
  • Make sure you are walking across the block rather than testing on ordinary terrain, soul fire or a soul-themed light block.
  • Verify that the boots actually show Soul Speed in their enchantment list.

The command fails

  • On Java, hold the eligible boots when you run the command and use the minecraft:soul_speed identifier.
  • On Bedrock, place the boots in the selected hotbar slot, enable cheats and use soul_speed without the Java namespace.
  • Use a level from 1 through 3 and confirm that you have permission to run commands.

The boots are wearing out quickly

That is expected on long soul-sand or soul-soil routes because each compatible block carries a 4% durability-loss chance. Add Unbreaking, repair with Mending and avoid unnecessary detours over compatible blocks when the boots are nearly broken.

Is Soul Speed worth putting on a dedicated pair of boots?

For regular Nether travel, yes. The speed benefit appears exactly where the terrain is slowest, and the durability penalty can be controlled with Unbreaking, Mending and spare equipment. For a player who rarely walks on soul sand or soul soil, the enchantment is situational; its value comes from Nether routes rather than from a general movement upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Soul Speed boots sometimes lose durability several blocks in a row?

The 4% durability check is independent for each compatible block. Random checks can cluster, so consecutive losses are possible even though the average chance per block remains the same.

Do soul torches, soul lanterns or soul fire activate Soul Speed?

No. The enchantment recognizes the terrain blocks soul sand and soul soil, not decorative or fire blocks that share the word “soul” in their names.

Can Soul Speed help while riding a boat, minecart or other vehicle?

Its documented effect is increased player movement while walking on soul sand or soul soil. It is not a vehicle-speed enchantment, so use it for routes you cross on foot.

What happens when Soul Speed boots run out of durability?

Once the boots break, they are no longer equipped and the Soul Speed effect is unavailable. Repair or replace them before attempting another long soul-sand crossing.
