World of Warcraft Starter Guide: Versions, Rulesets, and Playing Alone

Published 10 min read

Yes, you can play World of Warcraft alone, especially its outdoor story and leveling. The important first decision is which game you mean: modern World of Warcraft: Midnight, the permanent level-1-to-60 World of Warcraft: Forever, or World of Warcraft: Classic. They are separate Battle.net installations with different classes, races, and grouping rules. Pick the version first, then coordinate your faction—and, in Forever, your Ruleset—before creating a character. Hunters, Druids, Paladins, and other flexible classes make outdoor soloing easier, but there is no official “best beginner class.”

Which version should a beginner start?

Choose the version that matches the kind of Azeroth you want; characters do not move between Retail, Forever and Classic.

Retail World of Warcraft: Midnight

Retail is the modern game. A new character begins in Exile’s Reach, follows Dragonflight from levels 1–70, then an accelerated The War Within path to level 80. Players who own Midnight continue the Worldsoul Saga from there. The Starter Edition has a level cap and limits higher dungeons and raids, guilds, unrestricted chat and the Auction House; a subscription or Game Time removes those limits.

Retail is the clearest choice if you want extensive solo support, current systems, or the newest story. It also has the widest class roster, including Monk, Demon Hunter, Death Knight and Evoker.

World of Warcraft: Forever

Forever is a permanent, expanding reimagining of the original world, set in its early “Year 1” period before the Dark Portal reopened. It has a level cap of 60, nine launch classes and Rulesets instead of a long realm list. Blizzard’s global login window is 23:00 UTC on 4 November 2026 (3:00 p.m. PST on 4 November in the Americas and 00:00 on 5 November in Europe).

Blizzard describes Forever as a home alongside modern and Classic WoW, not a replacement for either. It is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.

World of Warcraft: Classic

Classic uses traditional realms and an older-style social structure. Its starter guidance emphasizes that characters can group only with others on the same realm, so friends should agree on a realm before anyone rolls a character.

Which class should I play as a beginner?

There is no Blizzard-published beginner tier list. Start with the combat role and fantasy you can imagine playing for dozens of hours, then try several characters to level 5–15 before committing; Wowpedia’s long-running newcomer advice estimates roughly an hour or two for each trial.

Class Forever roles and play style Retail roles
Druid Tank, healer, melee damage or ranged damage; shapeshifting and exceptional flexibility Tank, healer, damage
Hunter Ranged weapons with a pet; Forever also offers a melee variation Damage
Mage Arcane, Fire or Frost ranged damage; fragile but powerful and utility-heavy Damage
Paladin Tank, healer or melee damage; shields and Holy abilities Tank, healer, damage
Priest Healer or Shadow ranged damage; vulnerable when alone Healer, damage
Rogue Stealth, poisons, lockpicking and combo points Damage
Shaman Elemental or melee damage, healing and totems Healer, damage
Warlock Damage with life drain and summoned demons; pets help solo survivability Damage
Warrior Armed melee combat; tank or damage Tank, damage
Monk Not in Forever Tank, healer, damage
Demon Hunter Not in Forever Tank, damage
Death Knight Not in Forever Tank, damage
Evoker Not in Forever Healer, damage

For a first solo character, a Hunter’s pet can hold enemies while you use a bow or gun. A Druid lets you change between every major role, and a Paladin combines durable melee play with tanking and healing options. Mages, Rogues, Warlocks and Hunters are pure damage classes in Retail, so they carry less responsibility in groups but may wait longer for a group role. Tanks and healers are generally in higher demand.

What race should I pick in WoW?

Race determines your appearance, voice, starting zone, racial abilities, faction and available classes. Pick a look you enjoy that can actually use your preferred class; the racial difference is rarely more important to a new player than enjoying the character.

Skyborne (High Order) Alliance Yes Yes Yes — — Yes — — Yes

The Forever matrix adds several combinations that were not available in the original game: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. Skyborne choose a side during creation: Horde-aligned Windshapers can be Shamans, while Alliance-aligned High Order Skyborne can be Mages. Both versions share Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Warrior, and both begin in the level 1–12 Zephras Isle zone.

Skyborne and Zephras Isle require the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher digital upgrade. Kotaku reported the Heroic Pack at $30. That is an access requirement, not a statement about the current price of every Forever bundle.

Retail races and faction

Retail’s Allied Races must be recruited in-game before they become playable. The named Allied Races are Void Elf, Lightforged Draenei, Dark Iron Dwarf, Kul Tiran, Mechagnome, Earthen and Haranir for the Alliance, and Nightborne, Highmountain Tauren, Mag’har Orc, Zandalari Troll, Vulpera, Earthen and Haranir for the Horde. Because the official race hub is image-led, do not assume every core-race/class combination from a third-party list; check the creation screen for the current options.

Faction is normally locked to race. Pandaren choose a side, and Skyborne choose between their two alignments at creation. Alliance and Horde have limited social interaction outside combat, so friends should choose the same faction.

What is a ruleset in WoW Forever?

A Ruleset is Forever’s replacement for the traditional realm list. Blizzard says players select a Ruleset that matches how they want to experience Azeroth, and characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction.

  • Normal: Adventuring and fighting monsters, with PvP at your discretion. Blizzard calls it a welcoming place to learn.
  • PvP: Opposing players can attack you through much of the open world.
  • Roleplay: Naming and behavior conventions support an immersive community.
  • Roleplay-PvP: Roleplay conventions plus near-constant open-world PvP risk.
  • Hardcore: Planned for after launch; death ends that character’s journey. Blizzard has not announced its release date.

On first login, Forever also asks for an Experience Preset. Classic uses SD models and fewer modern interface helpers; Enhanced adds HD models, quest blobs, a one-bag inventory and transmog. Enhanced is Blizzard’s suggestion if you are unsure, but it is not permanent: model settings can later be changed in Options or at a Barbershop.

What realm should I choose as a new player?

In Forever, choose a Ruleset rather than a realm. In Retail and Classic, choose the same realm as your friends before creating characters.

Retail realms and War Mode

Retail offers Normal and RP realm types. Normal contested zones are not automatically free-for-all areas. From level 20, you can turn War Mode on through the Talents interface in a faction or capital city; it enables open-world PvP with other War Mode players from any realm. You can turn it off at any rest location. RP realms use the Normal ruleset and do not add open-world PvP.

Classic realms

Classic keeps the traditional realm boundary for grouping. A friend on another realm cannot simply join your dungeon or guild through the normal Classic rules, so settle the realm choice first.

Can you play WoW solo?

Yes. You can complete the open-world story and ordinary leveling alone, but the amount of solo-friendly instanced content depends sharply on the version.

Retail solo play

Retail’s Exile’s Reach is a guided solo introduction, and its first dungeon can be completed with NPC teammates. Follower Dungeons then let you queue for Normal difficulty with four NPC companions; you select your role, and the game fills the other roles. Optional Dungeon Assistance lets the NPCs lead.

Delves unlock from level 70 in Khaz Algar. They are completely solo adventures with Brann Bronzebeard as an NPC companion, typically lasting 10–15 minutes across 11 difficulty tiers. Blizzard describes their rewards as comparable to group-raiding rewards. Story Mode raids let one player, or a group of up to four friends, see raid narratives with NPC companions; the Azj-Kahet example supplies nine NPCs when entered solo.

Forever solo play

Forever’s outdoor questing, exploration, professions and Camping system are designed for one adventurer, so you can progress from level 1 to 60 without a permanent party. It does not describe Retail-style Follower Dungeons, Delves or Story Mode raids. Its nine new five-player dungeons span levels 13–60, alongside original dungeons, and the first raids—Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia’s Lair—unlock on 9 December 2026. Those activities are group content.

Hunter pets, Warlock demons, Paladin durability and Druid flexibility are commonly chosen for easier outdoor play, but that is practical community advice rather than an official ranking. If a Forever character dies, you can release to a graveyard, run back, or use a Spirit Healer, which causes durability loss and may apply Resurrection Sickness.

How do I start my first Forever character?

You need a Battle.net account, two-factor authentication, an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, and the Battle.net desktop app on Windows or Mac. Check the system requirements on the Battle.net product page before installing; controller support is listed as beta.

  1. Install Forever through the Battle.net desktop app and sign in.
  2. Choose the Experience Preset, then select a Ruleset. If you are uncertain, Normal and Enhanced are Blizzard’s approachable starting choices.
  3. Agree with friends on faction, Ruleset and a two-part character name. Names must be unique per region.
  4. Select a race and class that fit together in the matrix above. Skyborne characters require the Heroic Pack or higher and begin on Zephras Isle.
  5. Follow the early yellow ! quest markers and return quests marked with a yellow ?. Useful defaults are L for the quest log, M for the map, P for the spellbook, C for the character pane, K for professions and Escape for Options.
  6. Visit your class trainer as you level, carry food and drink, and bind your Hearthstone with an innkeeper.
  7. Choose two primary professions plus Cooking, Fishing and First Aid. Gathering professions—Herbalism, Mining and Skinning—pair naturally with questing.
  8. At a campsite, sit or craft for at least one minute to gain camp-feature benefits from nearby players’ professions.

Forever contains more than 1,000 new quests across the level 1–60 journey, according to Blizzard’s 2026 material. Let the opening quests teach your combat rotation before changing the interface or buying add-ons.

How much does WoW cost, and what is actually required?

Retail and Forever require a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time for unrestricted play. The current monthly USD price was not published in the material available here, so check the Battle.net shop for your region rather than relying on an old price. Forever’s base game is included with that access; the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle are the notable gated additions identified by Kotaku’s October 2026 coverage.

Be cautious with paperbacks marketed in search results as “complete official” 2026 Midnight strategy guides. Their listings are not evidence of Blizzard authorship. For lore, Icy Veins recommends Chronicle Volumes 1 and 2 as the starting point; World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook is a legitimate 240-page hardcover first published on 21 October 2016, but it is a recipe book rather than a gameplay manual.

How we picked the beginner advice

The recommendations above use Blizzard’s stated class roles, race restrictions, version rules, solo systems and launch information, then separate official facts from third-party commentary. Where a figure is not locked—such as Forever racial tuning, Hardcore’s date, subscription price or raid sizes—it is identified as uncertain instead of presented as a settled specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Newcomer Chat in retail WoW?

Newcomer Chat is a channel available to new players through level 50, where veteran guides can answer questions. Blizzard’s February 2026 guidance says eligible guides have an account in good standing, a level-80 character and at least 3,000 completed quests.

Are the 2026 “Midnight strategy guides” sold online official?

No official Blizzard authorship is established for the paperbacks using that marketing language. Treat their ratings and titles as retailer listings, not as Blizzard documentation.

Which World of Warcraft book should a lore beginner read first?

Icy Veins recommends Chronicle Volumes 1 and 2 because they establish Azeroth’s earliest history before later events. The first volume is commonly identified by ISBN/ASIN 1616558458.

Can I play WoW with a controller?

Forever lists controller support as a beta feature, so availability and behavior may change. Keyboard and mouse remain the safer assumption when planning your first setup.

When do Forever’s first raids become available?

Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia’s Lair are scheduled to unlock on 9 December 2026. Official material cited here does not settle every raid’s player-count format, so verify the in-game or Blizzard raid overview when those encounters open.
