Xbox October 28, 2026 Update Adds 10 New Features and Is Rolling Out Now

Published 6 min read

Xbox’s October 28, 2026 console update is rolling out now with 10 features covering achievement recognition, storage management, personalization, search, Remote Play, cloud gaming and system reliability. The headline addition is Mythic Achievements: completing every original achievement in a game grants a permanent Mythic status, even when later DLC or update achievements exist. You can check for the update at Settings > System > Updates, although staged distribution means some consoles may receive it later.

What are the 10 new Xbox features in the October 28 update?

The public release brings features previously previewed in Xbox Insider builds to general console users. Their practical impact ranges from profile presentation and dashboard control to storage, streaming and troubleshooting.

Feature What it does Availability or scope
Mythic Achievements Completing every original achievement for a game grants Mythic status. DLC and later update achievements are not required, and eligible completed games can receive the status retroactively, including Xbox 360 titles. Public update; applies to eligible games and prior completions.
Disc-to-digital license portal Viewing an old disc-to-digital license that is no longer accessible opens a console-native experience instead of sending you to a web page. Settings > General > Personalisation > Games & apps.
Unused local-save controls View, sort and delete local game saves that are not currently in use to reclaim console storage. Public console feature.
Selectable startup animation Choose startup animation options spanning Xbox One through the latest generation. Startup-sound selection is in the same area. Settings > System > Startup.
Higher-quality Remote Play Supported endpoints can receive Remote Play at up to 1440p with higher video bitrates. Xbox Series X|S console support and compatible Remote Play devices; Xbox’s preview required Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider builds.
Party-chat infrastructure Behind-the-scenes changes target future party reliability and security improvements. Public system update; no new user setting is required.
Dashboard customization Remove entries from the recent games and apps list, including the Play History tile, with the controller Menu button. Press the Right thumbstick button on Home to fade the interface and emphasize a dynamic or custom background. Public console feature.
Local search Search for games and achievements in My games & apps, official-club achievement lists and profile achievement history, alongside existing filters and sorting. Public console feature.
Cloud Gaming library and downloads Cloud-played games are added automatically to the Games section of My games & apps, where the Menu button can remove them. When network conditions allow, downloads continue while you stream. Public update; background downloading depends on network conditions.
Detailed profile badges Badges now show higher-resolution artwork plus information about when and how each badge was unlocked. Public profile feature.

How do Mythic Achievements work?

Mythic status recognizes completion of a game’s original achievement set. Xbox product leads Alex Charters and Eden Marie describe it as earning Mythic status when “you complete all original achievements for a game.” Achievements added later through downloadable content or updates do not count toward the requirement, and the status remains yours after it is awarded.

Xbox also says eligible games completed before the update can receive Mythic status retroactively. That includes Xbox 360 titles, provided the game’s original achievement set is recognized by the system.

How do I download the October 28 Xbox update?

  1. Open Settings on the console.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open Updates.
  4. Install the available console update and allow the Xbox to restart if prompted.

Xbox is distributing the release in stages. If no update appears, leave the console connected to the internet and check again later; an absent prompt during the rollout does not by itself indicate a fault. Automatic installation remains available when the update reaches your console.

Can Xbox download games while I stream from the cloud?

Yes, the update allows downloads to continue in the background while you play a cloud-streamed game when network conditions permit. The same cloud session also adds the streamed title to the Games section of My games & apps, and you can remove that entry with the Menu button.

This is a network-dependent behavior rather than a guarantee of full download speed. Streaming video and a game download compete for available bandwidth, so congested or unstable connections can limit or pause the transfer.

Does Remote Play support 1440p now?

Xbox’s updated Remote Play capability supports up to 1440p with higher video bitrates on supported devices. The feature was first documented for Xbox Series X|S consoles in Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider previews and does not require a separate subscription because Remote Play uses the console you already own.

“Up to 1440p” is a ceiling, not a promise that every phone, tablet, PC or network will display that resolution. The endpoint, console settings and connection quality all determine the delivered stream.

Where do I change the startup animation and dashboard appearance?

Startup animation and sound

Go to Settings > System > Startup to choose among animations spanning Xbox One through the latest generation and to adjust the startup sound.

Home screen and recent items

On Home, use the controller’s Menu button to remove unwanted entries from the recent games and apps list, including Play History. Press the Right thumbstick button to fade the Home interface so a dynamic or custom background is more prominent.

What bugs does the October update fix?

The release notes list fixes for several visible and stability problems:

  • Home repeatedly refreshing.
  • Consoles starting to a black screen instead of Home.
  • Downloads appearing to pause or stop.
  • Broken images or text for some compilation discs in the recent-games list.
  • Focus resetting or disappearing in My games & apps after refreshes.
  • Memory, performance and stability problems affecting users with very large libraries.

Why were these features available in previews first?

Xbox documented a group of the changes on September 9, including startup-animation choices, badge showcase controls, local search, higher-quality Remote Play, background downloads during cloud streaming, Voice Clarity and party improvements. Mythic Achievements followed in a September 29 announcement that clarified the original-achievement rule and retroactive treatment. The October 28 rollout moves the documented console features into the public release channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Mythic status require me to finish a game’s DLC achievements?

No. The requirement is the game’s original achievement set. DLC and achievements added by later updates are excluded, so an older completion can qualify without buying additional content.

Does the update add a new Xbox subscription for Remote Play or cloud downloads?

No separate subscription is identified for the Remote Play improvement; it uses the console already owned. Cloud-play access and download behavior still depend on the services and games available to your account.

How much storage space does the October update require?

Xbox has not published a download-size figure for this release. The update itself is software for existing consoles and does not require new hardware, physical media or an added storage device.

Are all 10 features available on Xbox One?

The public feature set is not identical across every device. Remote Play’s 1440p preview specifically targeted Xbox Series X|S, while settings, profile and dashboard features can vary by console generation and supported endpoint.
