It seems that Rockstar has decided not to move forward with a Red Dead Redemption or GTA 4 remaster, likely due to the disastrous launch of the classic GTA remasters. Instead, they hope fans will forget about the past.
Rumors have been swirling for a bit now that Rockstar Games had shelved all remakes. Just yesterday, a reliable GTA insider—Tez2—posted on Twitter that the Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters were no longer happening. “As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA IV & RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind,” they said.
Today, a staff writer at Kotaku named Zack Zwiezen has confirmed this rumor. “I can confirm that Tez’s tweet is accurate and lines up with what I’ve been told,” writes Zwiezen. Though an official statement hasn’t been given by Rockstar yet, it’s safe to say at this point that we can expect not to see these remasters—at least not any time soon. Supposedly a Red Dead Redemption or GTA IV aren’t entirely “out of scope,” though Rockstar won’t be moving forward with them on for now.
Zwiezen goes on to write that according to sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans and future projects, Rockstar is hoping that fans will completely forget about the classic GTA remasters while they focus instead on GTA 6. This sentiment likely comes from the disastrous performance of the classic remasters, as glitches and unnecessary changes wrecked the games’ launch. Not only that but Take-Two Interactive—Rockstar’s parent company—went after GTA mods in preparation of that launch, angering many long-time fans.
Whether fans will be able to get past these events remains to be seen. GTA 6 still does not have an official launch date, so it may be difficult for people to move on in the meantime.
