When you first start off in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, your character will only be able to walk slowly without the ability to run. However, this ability presents itself after only a few minutes into the game.

At the beginning of the game, you can only walk. There’s no button you can press to make your character run, nor is there an option in the game’s menu that you can enable. To run, you’ll need to just progress through the game a bit.

When you start the game, go downstairs and talk with your mom. After a moment, Director Clavell will knock on the door. Read the dialog and then you’ll be tasked with choosing your starter Pokémon—but you’ll be encouraged to walk with them a bit first before choosing. Director Clavell will then say he needs to visit another student’s house and will depart.

As you begin walking toward the house to meet Director Clavell, you’ll see an NPC standing off the path a bit to the right. Just continue walking toward this NPC and you’ll automatically start running when you get close to her. At this point, all you have to do is tilt the left joystick to run.

After you gain the ability to run, you’ll always run by default. However, you can also toggle your character to walk slowly by pressing B. You don’t have to continue holding B to walk—just press and release.

To make your character start running again, press B. Your character will then begin to sprint.
