As part of its publisher showcase yesterday, THQ Nordic announced that a new Alone in the Dark reboot would be coming to current-gen platforms. Early screenshots look similar in style to the 1992 horror classic.

Who Turned out the Lights?
Alone in the Dark is one of the most important survival horror franchises in gaming, but it hasn’t had the best track record in recent years. During the last two console generations, two different games attempted to revive the series and were met with mixed-to-negative reception. During its publisher showcase yesterday, THQ Nordic pulled back the curtain on a brand new reboot of the series. Being handled by developer Pieces Interactive (responsible for Magicka 2 and the recent Titan Quest expansions), this version of Alone in the Dark will be a third-person survival game and is scheduled to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
At Gamescom later this month (which is set to take place from August 24 to 28), a demo called “Grace in the Dark” will be playable on the show floor. A prologue to the main game with its own original storyline, the teaser will star Grace from Alone in the Dark 2. It wasn’t revealed if this demo would be coming to consoles at a later date, but it does seem likely given the original nature of its storyline. It could also be included in the final game as a prologue chapter to set the stage for the reboot.
Back to Basics
While not specifically a remake, THQ Nordic’s Alone in the Dark will be a reimagining of the original game in the series. Players are set to return to Derceto Manor and will be able to play as Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby searching for Emily’s uncle. This new installment won’t be slavishly devoted to the original and will include brand new elements different from what the original contained. THQ Nordic promises that players will travel beyond the manor and into nightmare realms and other locations.
Said to be in development since 2019, the game could have its release date revealed before the end of the year. At current, THQ Nordic has not committed to a specific date.
