Key Takeaway

Fetch Lands in Magic: The Gathering are Land cards that have an ability that lets you search your library for other Lands.

The three main benefits of Fetch Lands are:

  • Useful in multicolored decks for getting specific Lands onto the battlefield quicker
  • Decreasing Land draws later in games
  • Allowing you to shuffle your library on command

Throughout Magic: The Gathering’s long history, there have been many cards released aimed at helping players enjoy each game. Lacking mana is always disappointing. This is why Fetch Lands were introduced to MTG. They’re an easy and intuitive way to access what you need—when you need it most.

What Are Fetch Lands in MTG?

Fetch Lands in MTG are Land cards that have an ability that lets you search your library for other Lands. There’s usually a cost involved when you use a Fetch Land. Sacrificing the Fetch Land, paying life points, spending a bit of mana, or another variable may be required. Fetch Lands are always either Lands or Legendary Lands. They are never Basic Lands.

The Advantages of Fetch Lands in MTG

Fetch Lands are worth using in some MTG formats but not all of them. On top of that, they’re more useful for multicolored decks than for single-colored ones. Before you buy a bunch of Fetch Lands, consider how often you see them in your preferred format. That’s often a good indication of whether or not a card is worth using.

Fetch Lands Are Most Useful in Multicolored Decks

While the effect text varies between Fetch Lands in MTG, many allow you to search for a specific type of Land. For instance, Arid Mesa lets you search your library for a Mountain or Plains card. It doesn’t matter if the desired Mountain or Plains is basic, legendary, or another variant. They’re all searchable with Arid Mesa.

The Arid Mesa Fetch Land from MTG which depicts a mesa in a desert.

As such, if you have spells or permanents that specifically need a Mountain or Plains for an ability (instead of any Land), you can grab one efficiently with the help of Arid Mesa.

If you’re running a deck that embodies more than two colors, Fetch Lands become even more useful. It’s easy to starve yourself of mana in such decks. The odds of drawing one of each Land type you need are slim.

Even worse, getting the ideal opening hand in this regard is next to impossible without Fetch Lands. You never want to mulligan if you can help it, as this decreases your card advantage (unless the format you’re playing in offers a free mulligan).

Drawing Fetch Lands in your opening hand lets you search for the Lands you need. In turn, the downtime between building up your mana pool and casting your best spells is shrunk.

Decrease Land Draws Later in Games

Fetch Lands in MTG are great for getting around bad draws. Drawing Lands later in games isn’t as useful as drawing them early. Mid and late-game Land draws mean you don’t draw more useful cards, like your favorite Creatures or your most powerful Instants. Statistically, the chance of drawing exactly what you need at any given time increases as your library card count decreases.

    Shuffle Your Library on Command

If you have a deck that uses abilities or effects to peek at your library, Fetch Lands in MTG let you shuffle when needed. Let’s say you look at the top five cards of your library and you don’t like what you see. Triggering a Fetch Land forces you to shuffle your library, meaning the odds of getting better draws rise.

The opposite is true as well. If your opponent uses an ability or effect to look at the top of your library, you can counter this by triggering a Fetch Land. Keep your foe guessing! The element of surprise is crucial for pulling off your best strategies.

All Fetch Lands for Every Color (2024)

We’ll list all released Fetch Lands in MTG by their deck affinity. There’s a lot of overlap here, so weigh your options! Additional effects should be considered as well when building your deck.
