You can upgrade your weapons up to +3 by yourself. However, beyond that, you’ll need the help of an actual blacksmith. There are a couple that you can find fairly easily in Elden Ring. One even sells you rare upgrade materials.

    Smithing Master Hewg’s Location

Smithing Master Hewg is the first blacksmith you’ll be able to meet in Elden Ring. He’s found in the Roundtable Hold, which you can only access by speaking with Melina at a Site of Grace after you defeat Margit, the Fell Omen. You can find Hewg in the area of the Roundtable Hold that has weapons and smithing tools everywhere. After you leave the Roundtable Hold, you can come back later by teleporting to the Site of Grace in the very southwest corner of your map. Although, you won’t be able to teleport there if you’re in a dungeon.

The elderly smith will upgrade your weapons and help you apply Ash of War skills to them. You will need to pay him with Runes and provide Smithing Stones for weapon enhancements. How many Runes and what kind of Smithing Stones you need will depend on the weapon and its current upgrade level.

In addition to providing a crucial service, Hewg also gives you a lot of lore through his dialogue. Furthermore, you need to speak with him to progress Roderika’s questline so that she can become a Spirit Tuner (someone who can upgrade your Ash of War summons).

    Smithing Master Iji’s Location

There is a troll blacksmith that you can find in the western part of Liurnia of the Lakes. Northwest from the huge yet shallow lake that dominates the area is the Road to the Manor Site of Grace.

If you approach this Site of Grace from the north, you’ll be able to spot it easily. However, if you approach it from the south, you’ll have to pass through a hidden passage in the Kingsrealm Ruins.

You will need to attack the part of the wall that looks like the outline of a large doorway. When you do, you’ll find a friendly yet gigantic smith reading a book just beyond. They will politely introduce themselves before sharing some thoughts.

A troll wearing a shiny helmet who is reading a book introduces themselves as Iji while they are seated behind and anvil.

Afterward, they’ll offer you some advice in addition to some smithing services. Iji can upgrade your weapon for you, however, he cannot apply Ash of War skills to your weapons. Thankfully, you can do that yourself at the nearby Site of Grace.

    About Smithing Master Iji’s Advice

In addition to filling you in on some of the lore about Liurnia of the Lakes and the Carian royalty in the area, Iji will also give you a warning. Apparently, to repel an invasion of Cuckoo Knights from Raya Lucaria, the Carians placed some sort of magical trap in the area leading up to their manor. The manor lies north of Smithing Master Iji’s Location, and, as such, you should tread carefully as you progress that way.
