New or returning Fortnite players might not know how to crouch, which can be a big problem. Some challenges require players to crouch in order to complete them, but it also has a tactical advantage.

Why is Crouching Important in Fortnite?

Crouching is important in Fortnite because challenges often ask players to complete a task while crouched. Challenges provide experience, and experience is needed to level up and redeem rewards from the Battle Pass.

Crouching also lowers the volume of footsteps, meaning enemies will have a tougher time locating you. However, it doesn’t get rid of the footsteps indicator that appears when players enable the “Visualize Sound Effects” HUD option. Pros and long-time players usually apply this setting, but most people won’t.

Another tactical advantage to crouching in Fortnite is the ability to dodge enemy fire. You are vulnerable for a few seconds while using healing items, and moving will cancel the action. Crouching doesn’t cancel the action. So, lots of players take advantage of this by spamming the crouch button while using medkits and Slurp Juice to avoid receiving a headshot.

To crouch in Fortnite on the Switch, and PlayStation and Xbox consoles, you need to press R3 on the right joystick. This toggles crouch, so there is no reason to continue holding the button down. To stop crouching, press R3 again.

If playing on the “Old School” or “Quick Builder” controller configurations, you need to press L1 on PlayStation and Xbox, and L on Switch to crouch instead of R3.

By default, to crouch in Fortnite on PC, you need to press the Left Ctrl key. Although, it’s highly recommended to change the key binding because Left Ctrl is an awkward position if using WASD to move.

Just like on consoles, crouch is toggled, so there is no need to continue pressing the button once activated. To stop crouching, press Left Ctrl again.
