Getting a squad together in Fortnite without somebody having to take a break is rare. So, if you need to stop playing for a short while, sitting out is far more convenient than leaving and rejoining a party.

What is Sitting Out in Fortnite?
Sitting out in Fortnite is a feature that allows squads to stay in the same party, while one, or multiple, people take a break from the hectic battle royale gameplay. This means those who want to continue playing can do so without disturbing the makeup of the whole party.
Choosing to sit out instead of leaving a party is more convenient because it doesn’t involve sending out invites again every time somebody would like to come back from taking a break. When they’re ready to rejoin, they can do so on their own.
This is particularly helpful for crossplay parties. Although Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world and has relatively stable servers, it still has occasional connection issues. These are strained even further when playing with friends across different platforms. So, staying in a party will lessen the chance of a connection issue occurring.
How to Sit Out in Fortnite
To sit out in Fortnite, you first need to bring up the Main Menu and Social settings by selecting the icon seen in the top right-hand corner of the screen. To do this, press the Menu button on Xbox, options on PlayStation, and Plus on Switch. PC players just need to click the icon instead.
The second step is to open the Social settings. To do this, press the button indicated to the right of your username and picture, beside the cog icon. This is Y on Xbox, Triangle on PlayStation, and X on Switch. Again, PC players should just click the symbol.
A submenu will appear beside the cog symbol. When it does, navigate down to the “Participation” option and press the select button while hovering over “Sitting Out.” This is A on Xbox, X on PlayStation, and B on Switch. PC players only need to click on the text.
You will know you have successfully switched to sitting out when a green tick appears next to the “Sitting Out” text, and your character model is greyed out. You can now take that well-earned break while your squad continues to participate in matches without kicking you from the party.
How to Stop Sitting Out in Fortnite
To stop sitting out in Fortnite and rejoin your team, you just have to repeat the same process as sitting out:
- Bring up the Main menu and Social settings.
- Select the cog icon.
- Select “Playing” under the “Participation” submenu this time.
You can choose to stop sitting out at any time, but if your team is currently in a match, you will not be able to join them in the action until they have finished that match.
