Terraria: The Complete Potions Guide

Potions are essential when it comes to overcoming the challenges Terraria has to offer. By knowing more about Potions, you can minimize the chances of your misadventures and make your journey easier to become the ultimate boss.

Recovery Potions

There are three types of Recovery Potions in Terraria: Health Potions, Mana Potions, and Recovery Potions that heal both Health and Mana. You will also need a Placed Bottle or an Alchemy Table to craft these Recovery Potions yourself!

The Potion Sickness and Mana Sickness debuffs limit how often you can use Potions. Hard Mode accessories such as the Charms of Myths and Philosopher’s Stone can reduce the duration of Potion Sickness.

Health Recovery Potions

These Recovery Potions only recover your Health.

Mana Recovery Potions

These Recovery Potions only recover your Mana.

Health and Mana Recovery Potions

These Recovery Potions recover both your Health and Mana.

Food and Drink Potions

There are three types of buffs you will get from the Food and Drink Potions in Terraria: Well Fed, Plenty Satisfied, and Exquisitely Stuffed. These are a must when exploring unfamiliar or dangerous areas—especially when playing in Expert Mode.

Food and Drink Potions have a duration range of 4 to 48 minutes and can be canceled any time. Although some can be picked up, you will need a Cooking Pot or a Cauldron to craft the rest of the Potions.

Well Fed Potions

Well Fed Buff Potions will slightly boost your stats. It has a chicken leg and 1 star icon. These are the following boosts you will get: +5% damage, +2% critical hit, +0.5 minion knockback, +2 defense, +5% melee and mining speed, and +20% movement speed.

Plenty Satisfied Potions

Plenty Satisfied Buff Potions will boost your stats. It has a crab and 2 star icon. These are the following boosts you will get: +7.5% damage, +3% critical hit, +7.5% melee speed, +0.75 minion knockback, +3 defense, +10% mining speed, and +30% movement speed.

Exquisitely Satisfied Potions

Exquisitely Stuffed Buff Potions will greatly boost your stats. It has a crab and 2 star icon. These are the following boosts you will get: +10% damage, +4% critical hit, +10% melee speed, +1 minion knockback, +4 defense, +15% mining speed, and +40% movement speed.

Tipsy/Drunk Potions

Tipsy Potions increase your melee stats while decreasing your defense. It provides you with the following effects: +10% melee damage, +10% melee speed, +2% melee critical hit, and -4 defense.

Unfortunately, the only Drunk Potion called “Wiesnbräu” is a 3DS-only content. Upon consuming it, you will receive half damage but you can also only deal half your damage.

Buff Potions

There’s an exciting variety of Buff Potions that Terraria has to offer. They can be divided into seven types: Offensive Combat, Defensive Combat, Fishing, Mining, Exploration, Luck, and Social Buffs.

You can get creative with these potions, because there are some that can be used in multiple situations. You also don’t need any crafting station to make them!

Offensive Combat Buff Potions

You can use these potions to gain an advantage in any Boss fight. Whether you want to save your ammo, boost your stats, or increase your damage, these Offensive Combat Buff Potions got your back.

Defensive Combat Buff Potions

You can use these Potions to increase your defense when exploring or fighting any boss. You can reduce your enemy’s damage or increase your Health. These are very handy when you’re wanting to explore dangerous areas in your world.

Fishing Buff Potions

Fishing is an essential activity when playing Terraria. Although these Fishing Potions are only one of many features that can boost your fishing power, investing some time in crafting them is definitely worth it. As you may noticed in the other types of Potions, there are many recipes that require various types of fish! That’s your hint to get started on Fishing if you haven’t already.

Mining Buff Potions

Mining can be become a dangerous venture far too quickly. After all, there are strong enemies lurking in the dark. With these Potions, you’ll have an easier time finding the precious Ore that you’ll need to upgrade your tools and weapons. Or, if you’re in a hurry to become the boss of your world, you have to use these as often as possible.

Exploration Buff Potions

There are places that can be out of our reach or elements that can slow your journey down. Fortunately, there are Buff Potions that can help you with that. Have a hard time finding the floating islands? Use a Gravitation Potion. Want to walk on lava without taking damage? Use an Obsidian Skin Potion.

Luck Buff Potions

When you’re low on Luck, you may need to craft some Luck Potions to boost it. The Wizard can help you determine how much Luck you really have. Visit him before looking for rare and special items in your world.

Social Buff Potions

The effects of these Potions are purely cosmetic. However, if you do get lovestruck and want it gone, the Nurse will charge you for removing it.

Flasks in Terraria

The Flask Potions allow you to buff your melee and whips for a short time. You will need an Imbuing Station to craft these. It’s always good to know as much as you can about the weaknesses of the enemies you’re facing, because you can only use one Flask at a time!

Other Potions in Terraria
