After a brief opening scene, you’ll be in control of Zidane, a tailed human, in the Cargo Room of the Theater Ship. You’ll be prompted to light the candle in the middle of the room. However, before you light the candle, check the upper portion of the room for a Potion and 37 Gil.

Once you’ve lit the candle, you’ll be able to rename the main character. This guide will refer to him as “Zidane,” his default name.

Three members of the Tantalus Theater Troupe will enter the room, followed by a mysterious masked man. Thus begins your first battle.

The Masked Man is a simple boss fight. First, be sure to steal all three items from the Masked Man. Your entire party is made up of thieves, so steal each round until you’ve obtained all of the items. Don’t worry about Masked Man’s attacks, and don’t bother healing–even if one of your members falls.

Once you’ve stolen the items, just keep attacking and you’ll end the fight in no time.

The Masked Man will reveal himself as Baku, the leader of the Tantalus group. Enter the next room to go over the upcoming kidnapping mission. During the dialogue, you’ll be presented with two choices. If you choose That’s when I kidnap Queen Brahne, right? 64 times in a row, a special scene with Ruby will take place.

Select That’s when I kidnap Princess Garnet, right? to receive confirmation from Baku. Afterward, the screen will slowly fade and you’ll be ready for the next phase of the story.
