How to Recruit Withers, the Class-Changing NPC
Following the tutorial, you begin your adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3 on a beach beside the ruins of a crashed Nautiloid ship. To the north of where you awaken, you’ll discover the Overgrown Ruins. This is where you’ll find the NPC Withers, who can be invited to your camp for the rest of the game. Although he may be spooky, this mysterious skeleton is the key to changing your class and respecing your character at will.
Withers can be found in the northernmost room in the ruins, marked on the image below in red.
As you travel north of the crash site, you’ll discover multiple ways to enter the ruins. This includes an Ancient Door (X:283, Y:300) and an entrance to an abandoned Chapel (X:277, Y:377). Approaching either of these locations causes the ‘Explore the Ruins’ quest to trigger.
Upon entering the central chamber of the Dank Crypt, you’ll first need to visit the South Wing to find the key to the North Wing. Unfortunately, the South Wing is filled with traps, so be sure to bring a companion with high Dexterity to disarm them with ease.
After snagging the key from the coffin in the center, return to the North Wing. Pressing the button in the northwest alcove causes the many corpses in the room to awaken and a battle to begin.
Once your claim victory, you’ll discover that a secret door has opened near the button you pressed. Interact with the Richly-Adorned Sarcophagus to find Withers, who speaks to you in curious riddles. There are no right or wrong answers, so feel free to answer his questions however you see fit.
Upon taking a long rest and returning to your camp, Withers will be waiting for you. He’ll permanently remain with the party.

Selecting this option takes you to the familiar Class Selection screen, where you can adjust your Ability Scores to match your new class. You’ll also keep all the experience you’ve earned.
