Key Takeaway

You need six pieces of Refined Metal to fully upgrade your ship’s Hull in DREDGE. Here’s a breakdown of where to easily get six pieces of Refined Metal:

  1. Buy one Refined Metal from the Travelling Merchant at any pontoon location (costs $450.00)
  2. Find one Refined Metal in the blocked-off tunnel southeast of Dusty Pontoon in Gale Cliffs (beyond a breakable barrier)
  3. Find one Refined Metal at the west end of coordinates 2G—within the abandoned village of Stellar Basin (beyond a breakable barrier)
  4. Find one Refined Metal at the east end of coordinates 14E—in the mushroom area of Twisted Strand (beyond a breakable barrier)
  5. Get two Refined Metals from a Shrine of the Deep at the southeast corner of coordinates 14P—on the northeast side of Devil’s Spine’s largest island (give the shrine one Pale Skate and one Ghost Shark)

You need quite a lot of resources in DREDGE to completely upgrade your ship. The hardest resource to get is Refined Metal—as it’s rare and difficult to find. However, there are a few guaranteed spots where you can collect some!

    What is Refined Metal?

Refined Metals, unlike Metal Scraps (and other resources), cannot be farmed easily from plentiful spawn locations. There are only a few set places where you can find Refined Metal.

It’s an important resource, as, without it, you won’t be able to expand your Hull. This, in turn, will prevent you from getting more storage space and slots for equipment.

    Where to Find Refined Metal

There are five easy places to get Refined Metal. One is pretty pricey, however, the others won’t cost you much money—only time. Be sure to pick up a few Packed Explosives, as you’ll need them to get by barriers that are blocking your way to some pieces of Refined Metal.

Buy One Refined Metal From the Travelling Merchant (oo:45 in the Video Guide)

After you obtain at least one Relic, the Travelling Merchant stocks one Refined Metal in her inventory. You can find it in the far-right tab while shopping at the Shipyard of any pontoon location. It costs $450.00 for this one piece of Refined Metal, so be sure to save up some money!

Gale Cliffs Refined Metal Location (01:04 in the Video Guide)

A player sailing into a tunnel in Gale Cliffs in DREDGE.

The Refined Metal in Gale Cliffs is close to Dusty Pontoon. However, before you can access it, you need at least one Packed Explosive. Sail a bit southeast of Dusty Pontoon in Gale Cliffs and you’ll find a blocked-off tunnel.

Blast away the rocky barrier with an explosive, and, within the tunnel, you’ll find a dredging spot that gives you one Refined Metal. If you bought the Refined Metal from the Travelling Merchant, you should now have two in total.

Stellar Basin Refined Metal Location (01:48 in the Video Guide)

Next, head to Stellar Basin. At the northeast corner of coordinates 2G, you’ll find an abandoned village. Here, there are two wooden walkways blocking a section of the short river. To get by, you must use a Packed Explosive to clear away at least one of the wooden barriers.

Afterward, you’ll find a dredging spot that gives you one Refined Metal. It’s also worth noting that this general area is a great place to gather Lumber and Cloth. With that said, if you’re following this guide, you should have at least three Refined Metals.

Twisted Strand Refined Metal Location (02:30 in the Video Guide)

The player's ship near Rickety Pontoon in Twisted Strand in DREDGE.

After grabbing the goods from Stellar Basin, head to Twisted Strand. Start from Rickety Pontoon and sail west into the wooded maze. When you’re in the first clearing, take the northern fork. By doing so, you’ll enter the area with the mushrooms.

Once you enter the mushroom area, turn west. Follow the southern bank until you reach a fallen tree that rests beyond some huge tree roots. Now, blow up the fallen tree with a Packed Explosive to clear a path.

You’ll now see a dredging spot—this one gives you one Refined Metal. This spot is located at the southeast corner of coordinates 14E on the map. Your total, if you’re following this guide, should now be four Refined Metals.

Devil’s Spine Refined Metal Location (03:49 in the Video Guide)

The player approaching the Shine of the Deep on Devil's Spine's largest island in DREDGE.

Last but not least, you can get two Refined Metals in Devil’s Spine. Go to the northeastern side of this area’s largest island. At the southeast corner of coordinates 14P, you’ll find a Shrine of the Deep. When you interact with this shrine, you’ll see the silhouette of two fish.

At this point, you need to catch one Pale Skate and one Ghost Shark—both of which have nearby spawn locations. After catching them, go back to the shrine and place them on it. Afterward, you’ll get two Refined Metals, one Research Part, and one Fathomless Flame. Once you’ve reached this point in our guide, you should have six Refined Metals!
