Elden Ring: How to Upgrade Ashes

Spirit Ashes are some of the best tools you can employ in Elden Ring. Upgrade them and you’ll make them even better. This can be done with the help of a particular NPC and two types of upgrade materials.

Upgrading Ashes with Roderika

Roderika is the only NPC in the game who can upgrade your Spirit Ashes. You’ll first find Roderika at Stormhill Shack in Limgrave, to the right of the road past Gatefront.

Interact with Roderika here and exhaust her dialogue. Leave her be for now and make your way to Stormveil Castle. Press on until you arrive at the hall where the Grafted Scion is.

On the southwest corner of this hall, you’ll find a door. Head through it and turn left. There’s a pile of dead bodies ahead that’s guarded by two dogs. There’s an item atop this pile. Loot it to get the Chrysalid’s Memento.

Once obtained, return to Roderika and give this item to her. After exhausting her dialogue here once more, she’ll tell you that she’ll head for the Roundtable Hold. That’s where you’ll find her next.

Roderika will still go to the Roundtable Hold even if you don’t give her the Chrysalid’s Memento. She’ll get there on her own after you defeat Godrick and rest at a Site of Grace in Liurnia.

Turning Roderika Into a Spirit-Tuner

Once Roderika arrives at the Roundtable Hold, there are still a few things you’ll need to do to make sure she becomes a Spirit-Tuner.

Speak to Roderika and exhaust her dialogue. Then, head to Master Hewg and speak to him about Roderika. Hewg will tell you that Roderika has a gift for spirit tuning.

With this information, return to Roderika and tell her what Hewg told you. Return to Hewg again and tell him to watch over Roderika, and tell him it’s what she wants.

Reload the area by fast-traveling to the Roundtable Hold again. This time, you’ll find Roderika sitting in the same hallway where Hewg is, and she’ll now upgrade your Spirit Ashes for you as long as you have Gloveworts.

Upgrading Spirit Ashes With Gloveworts

There are two types of Gloveworts in Elden Ring just as there are two types of Spirit Ashes.

There are standard Spirit Ashes and there are elite Spirit Ashes.

You’ll need Grave Gloveworts to upgrade standard Spirit Ashes and Ghost Gloveworts for elite Spirit Ashes.

Standard Spirit Ashes are those you’d expect to fight while traversing the massive world of Elden Ring. These are Spirit Ashes of regular enemies and a few field bosses you encounter in the world.

Elite Spirit Ashes, on the other hand, are special characters that have their own relevance and lore. While some of them are variations of enemies you meet in the world, if you read their description, they’re usually different from the others of their kind. They’re often much more remarkable and important to the world-building of the game.

Where to Find Gloveworts in Elden Ring

Both Grave and Ghost Gloveworts can be found and picked up in catacombs, hero graves, underground levels, cemeteries, forts, and castles.

There are also bell bearings for Gloveworts, which allow you to purchase them from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold once acquired and given to the same merchant.

Where to Find Grave Gloveworts

Grave Gloveworts are more prominently found in catacombs and hero graves. Higher level variations of this upgrade material, though, begin appearing at late-game Legacy Dungeons.

Where to Find Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearings

Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearings are items you can give to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold. This will then allow you to purchase Grave Gloveworts from them. They’re mainly dropped by bosses found at various catacombs, except for the last variation.

Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1] Location

This bell bearing will allow you to purchase Grave Gloveworts 1 – 3 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

This is dropped by the Erdtree Burial Watchdog boss at the end of Wyndham Catacombs.

Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2] Location

The Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2] allows you to purchase Grave Gloveworts 4 – 6 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

This is dropped by the Ulcerated Tree Spirit boss at the end of the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs.

Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [3] Location

This bell bearing will allow you to purchase Grave Gloveworts 7 – 9 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

This is found in Crumbling Farum Azula, under a gazebo across a marshy area. It is guarded by a few Wormfaces.

From the Tempest-Facing Balcony, enter the structure to the southwest and proceed to the exit on the opposite side. There’s an elevator here that will send you down. Once at the bottom, look over to the southeast and you’ll find the gazebo you’ll need to get to.

Where to Find Ghost Gloveworts

Ghost Gloveworts can still be found in catacombs and hero graves, but they’re more rampant in underground levels and late-game legacy dungeons.

You can loot this from a corpse that’s lying under a gazebo in Nokron, Eternal City, east of the Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace.

Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [2] Location

This bell bearing will allow you to buy Ghost Gloveworts 4 – 6 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

You can find this in Nokstella, Eternal City. From the Site of Grace of the same name, head up to the flight of stairs to your west. At the very top, you’ll find a building to your left that contains multiple shielded Silver Tears. There’s a chest in this room that contains this bell bearing.

Ghost-Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [3] Location

This bell bearing will allow you to buy Ghost Gloveworts 7 – 9 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

This bell bearing is at a cemetery in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Start from the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace and take the elevator back up. Take the exit in the opposite room, then head to your left.

The bell bearing is on the ground at the furthest cliff, guarded by multiple Kindred of Rot enemies.
