Elden Ring: Where to Find Somber Smithing Stones

Somber Smithing Stones are used to upgrade special weapons in Elden Ring. They’re surprisingly not that difficult to gather, but you’re going to want a lot of them given how many powerful special weapons there are in the game.

Where to Find Somber Smithing Stones

There are 10 variations of the Somber Smithing Stone, one for each level upgrade from the base level to +10. You will only need one Somber Smithing Stone to upgrade a special weapon one level.

That means you’ll need a Somber Smithing Stone (1) to upgrade a special weapon from the base level to +1, a (2) to upgrade from +1 to +2, and so on until you get to +10, which is the max level of special weapons.

Like everything else in the game, the best way to earn Somber Smithing Stones is via exploration. However, if you manage to obtain Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings, you can purchase Somber Smithing Stones from the Twin Maiden Husk in the Roundtable Hold instead. You’ll also learn where to get those from this guide.

Somber Smithing Stones (1) in Limgrave:

• You can pick one up from a dead body that’s sitting on a chair overlooking the Dragon-Burnt Ruins west of Waypoint Ruins.
• From a Teardrop Scarab west of Deathtouched Catacombs.
• From a Teardrop Scarab south of the Church of Dragon Communion.
• Dropped by the Lion Guardian guarding the path to the Divine Tower of Limgrave in Stormveil Castle.

Somber Smithing Stones (1) in Weeping Peninsula:

• There are three of them in Morne Tunnel.
• You can pick one up behind Castle Morne by shoreline close to Leonine Misbegotten’s boss room.

Somber Smithing Stones (1) in Liurnia:

• There’s one in Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
• There’s one on a corpse sitting in a chair to the northwest of the Folly on the Lakes Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stones (2) in Limgrave:

• One is located in Stormveil Castle across the Armament Storage area, hidden behind an Imp Statue.
• One is given to you by Blaidd after defeating Darriwil at the Forlorn Hound Evergaol after having spoken to Blaidd in Mistwood.

Somber Smithing Stones (2) in Weeping Peninsula:

• You can find one close to the shore southeast of Castle Morne. The body that holds the material is surrounded by four Spirit Jellyfish.

Somber Smithing Stones (2) in Liurnia:

• One is dropped by a Teardrop Scarab in the southwest corner of the Liurnia of the Lakes.
• There are three Somber Smithing Stones (2) in the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
• The Spider Hands in Caria Manor occasionally drop them.

Somber Smithing Stones (2) in Siofra River:

• One is on a corpse found at the top of a broken structure south of the Worshipper’s Woods Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stones (2) in Caelid:

• One is found in Gael Tunnel.

• There’s one from a Teardrop Scarab in northern Liurnia, west of the Grand Lift of Dectus.
• One can be looted from a corpse on a chair south of the East Raya Lucaria Gate Site of Grace.
• One can be looted from a corpse in eastern Caria Manor.
• Another can be looted from a corpse on a chair north of The Four Belfries.
• There’s one near the rotating elevator in Raya Lucaria Academy, guarded by a Monolith Guardian.
• There are three inside the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
• There’s one behind the altar in the Church of the Cuckoo.

• The miners in Sellia Crystal Tunnel often drop this upgrade material.

Somber Smithing Stones (3) in Ainsel River:

• You can loot one off a corpse close to the butterflies by the edge of the cliff.

Somber Smithing Stones (4) in Liurnia:

• One is found on the rooftops of the Raya Lucaria Academy. It is in a room loitered by small crabs.
• One is found in the cave before you reach the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
• There’s one near the lake south of Caria Manor.

Somber Smithing Stones (4) in Caelid:

• The Miners from Sellia Crystal Tunnels often drop them.
• There’s one in Gael Tunnel.
• There’s one near the Minor Erdtree in northwestern Caelid.

Somber Smithing Stones (4) in Altus Plateau:

• There’s one that can be looted from a corpse in the Old Altus Tunnel.
• The Spider Hands in the sewer sections of Leyndell often drop them upon death.

• There’s one on a corpse northwest of the Road of Iniquity Site of Grace.
• The Spider Hands outside Volcano Manor often drop them.

Somber Smithing Stones (5) in Caelid:

• There’s one in the Gaol Cave in western Caelid.
• There’s one on a body north of the Swamp of Aeonia.
• You can find one in the Redmane Castle in the room before the lift that takes to you where the portal is to Radahn’s boss arena.

Somber Smithing Stones (5) in Altus Plateau:

• There’s another on a corpse east of the Woodfolk Ruins. The body is inside a crumbling building.
• There’s one in a room north of the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace.
• In the western section of the Shaded Castle, you’ll find one on a body lying underneath a dead tree.
• There’s one in a small cavern at the bottom of the Old Altus Tunnel.

Somber Smithing Stones (5) in Nokron:

• There’s one dropped by a Scarab on the bridge after the Mimic Tear boss.

Where to Get Somber Smithing Stones (6)

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Caelid:

• You receive one after defeating the Fallingstar Beast in Sellia Crystal Tunnel.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Altus Plateau:

• There are two of these in the Old Altus Tunnel. One is next to a shed in an area that’s climbed via a ladder and the other is at the bottom of the main chamber.
• The Lion Guardian in Leyndell drops one.
• Dropped by the Scarab that grows larger on the bridge that leads to the elevator to the Forbidden Lands.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Mt. Gelmir:

• There’s one on a body that’s sitting in a chair with a wolf beside him south of the First Mt. Gelmir Campsite.
• One is dropped by the Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Nokron:

• Dropped by the Lesser Crucible Knight in the Siofra Aqueduct.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Ainsel River:

• There’s one that can be looted off a corpse that’s clinging by the ledge in Uhl Palace Ruins.
• There’s one from a Teardrop Scarab in Nokstella, at the bottom of a flight of stairs.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Lake of Rot:

• There’s a Teardrop Scarab in the southern section of the Lake of Rot.

Somber Smithing Stones (6) in Deeproot Depths:

• Dropped by a rolling ball in the ruins across the Deeproot Depths Site of Grace.

Where to Get Somber Smithing Stones (7)

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in Mt. Gelmir:

• There’s one on a ledge behind an Abudctor Virgin. In the tall chamber before the balcony where the portal to Rykard’s boss room is, there’s a door locked by an Imp Statue. Open it with Stonesword Key and proceed onwards. Reach the very bottom of the chamber and look for a flight of stairs that leads upwards. You’ll spot the Somber Smithing Stone (7) in the next area. Alternatively, you can use the massive wheel beyond the bridge before the Temple of Eiglay to jump onto the ledge and reach the Somber Stone.

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in Ainsel River:

• There’s one locked in a chest in a room guarded by Silver Tears.
• You can loot one from a corpse close to a ledge east of the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in Lake of Rot:

• There’s one found on a corpse beyond the lake east of the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace.
• There’s one on a corpse lying on a patch of land southwest of the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in Deeproot Depths:

• There’s one in a room in western Deeproot Depths.
• There’s a small cave east of the Walking Mausoleum that contains one of this material.

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in the Mountaintops of the Giants:

• One is dropped by a beetle that’s hanging on a tree north of the Zamor Ruins.
• The small Spider Hands northeast of the Giants’ Gravepost Site of Grace have a chance of dropping them.

Somber Smithing Stones (7) in Crumbling Farum Azula:

• There’s one on a floating platform that leads to a dragon.

Where to Get Somber Smithing Stones (8)

Somber Smithing Stone (8) in Liurnia:

• You can obtain one in the northern section of the Moonfolk Ruins. This area is hidden underground behind an illusory wall.

Somber Smithing Stone (8) in Caelid:

• There’s one dropped by a Scarab northeast of the Dragonbarrow West Site of Grace. Be careful, though. This Scarab explodes upon death.

Somber Smithing Stones (8) in Lake of Rot:

• There’s one from a corpse that’s dangling off a small patch of land northeast of the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace.
• There’s another corpse in the southeastern corner of the Lake of Rot that holds one Somber Smithing Stone (8).

Somber Smithing Stones (8) in the Mountaintop of the Giants:

• There’s a teleporting Scarab west of the Foot of the Forge Site of Grace that drops this upgrade material.
• Dropped by a Scarab south of the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stones (8) in Consecrated Snowfield:

• This one is dropped by a Scarab northeast of the Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace.
• There are three Somber Smithing Stones (8) in the Yelough Anix Tunnel.

Somber Smithing Stone (8) in Miquella’s Haligtree:

• There’s one from a corpse on a building balcony north of the Haligtree Town Plaza Site of Grace.

Somber Smithing Stone (8) in Crumbling Farum Azula:

• You can pick one up from a corpse in the eastern section of the Dragon Temple Rooftop.

Somber Smithing Stone (9) in Caelid:

• There’s one on a corpse sitting among a circular group of bodies at the bottom area outside the Divine Tower of Caelid.
• A Scarab located west of the Farum Greatbridge drops one of this upgrade material.

Somber Smithing Stone (9) in the Lake of Rot:

• You can loot one from a corpse that’s on a raised platform at about the center of the lake. This area is close to where you fight the Alabaster Lord.

Somber Smithing Stone (9) in the Mountaintop of the Giants:

• There’s one from a corpse sitting on a chair on the bridge south of the Stargazer’s Ruins.

Somber Smithing Stones (9) in Consecrated Snowfield:

• There’s one in Yelough Anix Tunnel in the same room where the second Onyx Lord is.
• There’s one from a corpse that’s sitting on a chair east of the Apostate Derelict.

Somber Smithing Stones (9) in Miquella’s Haligtree:

• You can loot one off a corpse in a small building south of the Haligtree Town Plaza Site of Grace.
• There’s one on a corpse in a dark area found in the lower sections of the Brace of the Haligtree. The corpse is guarded by three Crystalians.
• There’s another in a room to the left of the Erdtree Avatar.

Somber Smithing Stones (9) in Crumbling Farum Azula:

• There’s one under a broken bridge in the area you are led when you ride the elevator down near the Tempest-Facing Balcony.
• There’s one on a platform just before you reach the Dragon Temple Site of Grace.
• You can loot one off a corpse in northern Crumbling Farum Azula.

Where to Get Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Mohgwyn Palace:

• There’s one in a chest before the huge statue that’s worshipped by Albinaurics and a Sanguine Noble near the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Consecrated Snowfield:

• You receive one by completing Latenna’s side quest, which you can do by taking her to the Apostate Derelict.
• You receive one by defeating Anastasia, Tarnished Eater when she invades you for the third time near the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Miquella’s Haligtree:

• At the end of the area beyond the Prayer Room Site of Grace, there’s a beam you can jump onto to your right and a rooftop with a gazebo to your left. From here, go to the upper platform and enter the dark room to find a chest. There’s one Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone here.
• There’s one to the right of the Erdtree Avatar in the walkway east of the Prayer Room Site of Grace.
• You receive one after inserting the Unalloyed Gold Needle to the Scarlet Aeonia in Malenia’s boss room after she is defeated.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Crumbling Farum Azula:

• There is a large dragon past the Dragon Temple Lift Site of Grace. Behind the dragon is a gazebo. You’ll find one Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone here.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Leyndell, Capital of Ash:

• West of the Leyndell, Capital of Ash Site of Grace, there’s a building behind the dragon with a ladder you can climb. At the top, look over the ledge and you’ll find a corpse next to a gargoyle. You’ll find the upgrade material here. Take note that you can only pick this up after the state of Leyndell changes after you finish your task in the Mountaintop of the Giants.

Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings

Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings are Key Items you can give to the Twin Maiden Husk in the Roundtable Hold. Giving these to them will allow you to purchase Somber Smithing Stones from them.

After collecting all Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings, you will be able to purchase Somber Smithing Stones 1 through 9 from the Twin Maiden Husk. Only the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone isn’t made available by any Bell Bearing.

Upon giving the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (1) to the Twin Maiden Husk, you can then purchase the Somber Smithing Stones (1) and Somber Smithing Stones (2) from them.

You receive this after defeating the Crystalian Duo at the end of the Altus Tunnel.

Give it to the Twin Maidek Husk to be able to purchase the Somber Smithing Stone (3) and Somber Smithing Stone (4).

This can be looted off a corpse outside the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintop of the Giants.

This will allow you to purchase the Somber Smithing Stone (5) and Somber Smithing Stone (6).
