In November 2021, Nintendo released the Version 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Along with new decorating options and quality-of-life features, it also added some familiar faces and locales from past games. This includes the popular barista Brewster and his cafe The Roost, which you’ll need to unlock.

Who is Brewster and What is The Roost?
First featured in Animal Crossing: Wild World for the Nintendo DS, Brewster is a classy pigeon with a passion for coffee. He owns his own cafe, The Roost, and has become a fan favorite since his first appearance in 2005.
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, players could occasionally work at The Roost to serve coffee to villagers and visitors. Each customer had different preferences, and serving up the perfect cup of coffee would earn the player special rewards. While many fans of New Horizons were hoping for this mechanic to return, Brewster isn’t hiring in the newest Animal Crossing title.
In New Horizons, The Roost is located inside the museum once it’s unlocked.
Unlocking The Roost
Before getting started, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve completed the following tasks:
- Have the Version 2.0 update installed
- Have a 3-Star (or above) Island Ranking
- Have donated at least one bug, one fish, one sea creature, and one piece of art to the museum
- Have unlocked the art wing of the museum
After ensuring that the above requirements are met, head to the museum and find Blathers. The brainy owl should be deep in thought. Chat with him to find out that he’s looking for a new way to drive traffic to the museum, and a cafe is his first idea. Sadly, his friend and barista Brewster closed up shop long ago and vanished.
Blathers will ask you to try your luck at finding Brewster, letting you know that he’s a big fan of gyroids and giving you a helpful photo of the pigeon himself. These dancing statues appear in many Animal Crossing games and were also added to New Horizons with the Version 2.0 update.
Finding Brewster and Building the Roost
The popular song-loving turtle Kapp’n was also added in the massive 2.0 update, and he’s the one who will take you to Brewster. Visit your dock to find him and ask for a boat tour. This allows you to visit one uninhabited mystery island once a day for only 1,000 Nook Miles.
When you arrive at your first island, you’ll come across the quiet coffee-obsessed pigeon Brewster. He explains that he’s on a hunt for gyroids and will gift you your first gyroid, explaining how to make it grow. It doesn’t take much convincing to get Brewster to return to your island.
Return to Blathers and let him know the good news. The museum will then be closed the following day during the construction of the cafe.
Things to Do at The Roost
Once the cafe is open, take a seat at the counter and have a chat with Brewster to get a piping hot cup of coffee for only 200 Bells. On occasion, a villager or resident will also be enjoying a drink, and you can chat to them for some unique dialogue.
Brewster takes his coffee seriously, demanding that you enjoy it immediately. If you visit The Roost and drink your coffee immediately for three days in a row, you’ll be able to take a coffee to go. (Yes, it’s a holdable item that’s perfect for cozy snapshots!) Chatting with Brewster often will reward you with coffee beans and DIY recipes along with new dialogue options related to your order.
You can use amiibo or amiibo cards to invite your favorite characters to The Roost by interacting with the yellow phone in the cafe. Sometimes, the characters you invite will even bring a friend of their own. Additionally, if friends are visiting your island, you can visit The Roost together.
Visiting the cafe on your birthday, New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or Toy Day will trigger special dialogue from Brewster.
Sadly, it’s not possible to work at The Roost in New Horizons, though many players have been begging Nintendo for this feature to be added somewhere along the line. Though it seems unlikely at this point, perhaps the day will come when you can live your barista dreams.
