How to Build a House in Terraria
A House is one of the many structures that you can build in Terraria. Houses are necessary considering you’ll need a safe haven when it is nighttime. Aside from that, NPCs also need them to respawn should they fall.
At the beginning of the game, you’ll be required to build a basic starter house. Starter Houses are basic houses that simply meet the minimum requirements of a house in Terraria. These will be suitable places for you and NPCs to hide in to remain safe from zombies and demon eyes. As you continue playing and gain access to more resources, you’ll have the chance to build more intricately designed houses that you can customize to your heart’s extent, such as themed houses.
Themed houses are merely houses you build that are designed in a way that fit the biome they’re on. As such, you’ll need the right materials so your frame, walls, and furniture, among other things, fit the themed house you’re building.
House Requirements
For a structure to be considered a house in Terraria, it needs to meet a couple of requirements. Take note of the following when you build your first house, starting with the structure of the house itself.
- The house must be walled from all sides. This means the structure must be covered on either side and above. The walls of the house need to be made of solid, unactuated tiles.
- The entire frame of the house needs to occupy at least 60 tiles. It also shouldn’t exceed 750 tiles. This means, at the very least, the house needs to be eight tiles wide and eight tiles high. It’s then up to you to adjust the dimensions whether you want the house to be wider or taller, for as long as they meet the minimum and maximum tile requirements.
- The house needs to have a background wall. The background wall needs to be placed by you. This means houses built underground and in caves that have dirt walls in the background do not count. However, there are exceptions to this.
- Planked Walls in Underground Cabins, Disc Walls in Floating Islands, and Sandstone Brick Walls in Pyramids count as background walls.
The furniture inside are also taken into account. The house will need to have:
- An entrance such as a door or a platform.
- At least one light source. The earliest light source you can build is a torch.
- A comfort item. This refers to chairs, beds, thrones, toilets, or benches.
- A flat surface item such as work benches, tables, pianos, dressers, bookcases, or bathtubs.
Other Housing Restrictions
Aside from those listed above, there are other things you’ll need to consider to build a house in Terraria. More specifically, there are things you shouldn’t do for the structure to be classified as a house.
- A house can have holes, or empty tiles, in the background as long as the hole isn’t 5 tiles wide or tall. However, this may allow monsters to spawn inside the house. It’s best to place Glass Walls instead of leaving a background wall empty for those who want to place windows in their houses.
- The house cannot be built in The Corruption and The Crimson.
- The house should be uncorrupted.
That’s basically all you’ll need to know to begin building houses in Terraria. Start by building a very simple and modest Starter House. Once you’ve gotten the hang of building structures and you’re capable of obtaining the right materials, you can explore building themed houses such as a beach house, jungle house, snow house, and more.
Starter House
A Starter House is all you’ll need to truly have a home in Terraria. It’s where you or a fallen NPC can spawn after getting killed. A Starter House can be the barest as long as they meet the requirements above.
The moment you figure out how to build a Starter House, creating more intricate and bigger houses will become much easier. Consider this your way of learning the fundamentals that will help you understand how to build themed houses later on.
The house that you learn to build during the tutorial is basically the most basic version of the Starter House. If you haven’t played through the game’s tutorial, here are the things you’ll need to build a Starter House.
Starter House Materials
Item | Quantity | Description | How to Acquire |
---|---|---|---|

Gel | At least one. | You'll need Gel to craft Torches, the house's light source. | You can get Gels by killing slimes. |
Work Bench | 1 | The Work Bench is a crafting station. You need this to build other materials for the house, such as Wood Walls and a Wooden Chair. The Work Bench counts as a flat surface item. | The Work Bench can be crafted at the beginning of the game. You'll only need 10 Woods to do so. |
Wood Wall | At least 32. | The Wood Wall is the background wall of the house. | You can craft the Wood Wall as long as you have a Work Bench. One piece of Wood creates four Wood Walls. |

Torch | At least one. | This is the easiest and most-readily available light source in the game, which the house needs. | You'll need one Gel and one Wood. This will generate three Torches. You don't need a Work Bench to craft a Torch. |
Beach House
Now that you have the Starter House out of the way, you can get started on working on themed houses, such as a Beach House. A Beach House, as the name suggests, is a house built on the Ocean biome.
Ocean biomes are situated at the left and right edges of the world. That said, if you want to head to the beach, start walking to the west or the east while staying above ground. You’ll eventually arrive at the sandy shores before reaching a large body of water.
To build a Beach House in Terraria, you’ll want to use materials befitting the theme. You can use Palm Wood instead of regular wood when creating the frame of the house, the comfort items, and flat surface items in the house. You can also have part of the beach house situated right above the waters to further highlight the essence of your themed house.
Beach House Materials
Item | Quantity | Description | How to Acquire |
---|---|---|---|
Palm Wood | As many as possible. | The Palm Wood will be the main material in which most of the other materials you'll need for the beach house will be used from, from the chairs and tables to the frame of the house itself. | Cut down palm trees. |
Wall | As many as needed. | You can go with any kind of wall for the beach house. Use the type of wall that fits your overall design, whether it be Planked Wall, Wood Wall, Palm Wall, etc. | Can be crafted with the Work Station and requires Wood. The type of Wood will determine the type of the wall. |
Palm Wood Door | At least one. | This is the entrance to your house. Choose the Palm Wood Door to fit the design of the beach house. Otherwise, you can use any kind of door you want. | You can craft the chair with six Palm Woods using a Work Table. |
Palm Wood Work Bench or Palm Wood Table | At least one. | Just like any house, you'll need a flat surface item for the beach house. You can use a Palm Wood Table to match the frame, or a Palm Wood Work Bench for efficiency. | 10 Palm Woods for the Palm Wood Work Bench and 8 Palm Woods for the Palm Wood Table. |
Palm Wood Chair or Palm Wood Bed | At least one. | This is a comfort item that's aesthetically perfect for the beach house. | You'll need four Palm Woods to craft this on a Work Bench. If you want to build a Palm Wood Bed instead, you'll need 15 Palm Woods and five Silks. You must also use a Sawmill to build it. |
Any light source | At least one. | Any house needs a light source. You can go for torches as usual, but with the availability of Pine Wood and others, you can also create Candelabras, Lanterns, Chandeliers, and others. | Torch and Wood. |
Palm Wood Fence | As many as needed. | You can use Palm Wood Fences as mere decorations to give your beach house a more pleasing look. They can also function as background walls for your house. Palm Wood Fences can also be used as columns. | One Palm Wood can create four Palm Wood Fences. |
Wooden Hammer | One. | Hammers are used to create slopes, half blocks, and on platforms to form staircases. You can use these to design the edges and corners of your house. They can also be used to break background walls should you want to change them. The Wooden Hammer is the most basic variation of the hammer. | You can create a Wooden Hammer using a Work Bench with eight Woods. |
Palm Wood Platforms | As many as needed. | Platforms can be used to create staircases. They can also be used as ground you can jump onto or jump off of when placed on a higher floor. | One Palm Wood can craft two Palm Wood Platforms. |
Other than these, you can use any decor you want to design the inside and outside of your house. You can use items such as crates, campfires, life preservers, and more to give your house that inspired beach-themed look.
Jungle House
The Jungle House is another biome-themed house that you can build in Terraria. There is a chance for you to spawn near the Jungle. If you want to seek out this biome, start heading east or west. The only thing you should remember is that the Jungle will always be on the opposite side of the Dungeon and the Snow biome. So if you stumble upon those, run the opposite way instead.
The Jungle biome is noticeably more challenging than other biomes like the Forest and the Ocean. This is especially true for Hardmode. That being said, you can really benefit from building Jungle houses in this biome for yourself and NPCs. For this, you’ll want to use materials that are typically found in the Jungle.
Jungle House Materials
Item | Quantity | Description | How to Acquire |
---|---|---|---|
Rich Mahogany | As many as needed. | You'll use the Rich Mahogany wood as the frame for your house. It is also the material you will use for most of the furniture and other items. | You can get this wood by chopping down trees in the Jungle biome. |
Bamboo | As many as needed. | You will use the bamboo to create furniture and other items for your house. If you want, you can also use this as walls for your house. | Use a pickaxe on a bamboo plant. These plants can be found in the Jungle. |
Walls | As many as neeeded. | The house needs background walls. Use whatever type of wall you want, as long as it fits your theme. | Create any type of Wall using any type of Wood. The type of Wood you use will determine the type of Wall you create. You'll also need a Work Bench to create these walls. |
Table or Work Bench | At least one. | This is your house's flat surface item. If you decide on a Work Bench, this is also used to craft other items. | You can build a Work Bench with 10 pieces of Wood. The type of Work Bench you create will be based on the type of Wood you use. If you go for a table, you'll need a Work Bench and eight Woods. For this house, you can use Rich Mahogany or Bamboo so your furniture matches your theme. |
Chair or Bed | At least one. | This is your house's comfort item. | You'll first need a Work Bench before you build chairs. You'll then need four pieces of a type of Wood. If you're going for a Bed, you'll need 15 Woods, five Silk, and you must craft it using a Sawmill. For this house, you can use Rich Mahogany or Bamboo. |
Torch or Candle | At least one. | A house needs a light source. You can use any that will fit your theme. | You'll need a Gel and a Wood to create a Torch. You can then use the Torch, along with Rich Mahogany to create a Rich Mahogany Candle. |
Rich Mahogany Fence | As many as needed. | The fence can be used as decoration and as columns for the house itself. | You can create four Rich Mahogany Fences with one Rich Mahogany using a Work Bench. |
Rich Mahogany Platform | As many as needed. | Platforms can be used to build staircases that lead to the house or as ground to jump onto or off of in between floors. | You can create two Rich Mahogany Platform with one Rich Mahogany. |
Bamboo Door | At least two. | These are the entrances for your house. | You'll need five Bamboos and use it on a Work Bench. |
Hammer | At least one. | You can use this to turn blocks into slopes and platforms into staircases. You can also use this to destroy walls. | Create hammers by using eight of a type of wood. The type of wood will determine the type of hammer. You'll also need a Work Bench to create a hammer. |
Once again, decorate and structure the house however you wish. You can buy a Paintbrush from the Painter NPC if you want to change the color of certain tiles. You can use other types of wood if you wish. Just like the house in the image above which abundantly uses Shadewood as much as Rich Mahogany. Finally, you can use wands to adorn your ceilings and walls. These will further give your house a “jungle-themed” look.
Snow House
Fulfill your fantasy of having a winter wonderland by making a house in the Snow biome. The Snow biome, or Tundra, is forever in a state of winter. Thankfully, this is purely for aesthetic purposes.
Make no mistake, though, as the Snow biome is also home to enemies like Frozen Zombies and Ice Slimes. If you want to gather materials in this icy area, you’ll need to build a house on it. You can really stick to this theme and build an igloo for yourself and other NPCs.
Snow House Materials

---|---|---|---|
Ice Blocks | As many as you can. | You can use the Ice Block as the frame for your igloo. You'll also use this to create other items for your house. | Use a pickaxe and break down ice blocks from the ground or underground caverns in the Snow biome. |

Ice Machine | At least one. | This one is purely for aesthetics. If you want to craft frozen furniture such as Frozen Table and Frozen Chair, you'll need an Ice Machine. This is an optional alternative, but a better one if you want to fully stick to your theme. | You can purchase this from the Steampunker for 10 Gold Coins. The Steampunker needs to be in the Snow biome. |
If you’re sticking to the igloo design, follow the structure as shown in the image above. You can further decorate your house however you wish. You can also place a Glass Wall at the center, which can act as a window.
Underground House
You can take your creativity a step further and build a house underground instead of on the surface. The underground world of Terraria is filled to the brim with resources, materials, and items you can use to get through the game up until the end.
Considering this, it only makes sense to make a lot of your exploration in the dark underbelly of Terraria‘s world. You’ll have a much better time exploring the underground if you can manage to build houses down there. You can use darker stone blocks for this to give your house that rough, underground look.
Underground House Materials

---|---|---|---|
Stone Blocks | As many as needed. | Use this as the frame for your underground house. | Stone Blocks are abundant in the underground. Break them down using a pickaxe. |
Any background wall | As many as needed. | Houses in the underground still need background walls. The natural dirt walls of the caves don't count. You'll need to craft your own and put them up. | You can use whichever background wall you like, such as Stone Walls, Stone Slab Walls, Tin Brick Walls, etc. Walls can be crafted with Blocks, Bricks, and Wood, among others. One of these can generate four Walls. You'll also need a Work Bench to craft them. |
Torch or Candle | As many as needed. | A Torch or a Candle is your house's light source. You'll only need one, but the underground can be considerably dark depending on how deep you are. Use as many as you want. | You'll only need one Gel and one Wood to create a Torch. As for the candle, you'll need a Torch and four Woods. |
Platforms | As many as needed. | If your underground house has multiple floors, you'll need a space for platforms so you can traverse between the floors. | One type of Wood or Brick can create two Platforms. |
Table or Work Bench | At least one. | This is your flat surface item. The Work Bench is also needed to craft other items. | A Work Bench requires 10 Wood or Block of any kind. The table requires eight Woods or Blocks and must be made using a Work Bench. |
Chair or Bed | At least one. | This meets the comfort item requirement. | A chair requires four Woods or Blocks and must be made using a Work Bench. A bed requires 15 Woods or Blocks and five Silks. It needs to be made using a Sawmill. |
Door | At least one. | This is the entrance to your house. | You'll need six Blocks or Woods to craft a door. The type of door will depend on the material used. You'll also need a Work Bench for this item. |
Forest House
The Forest is one of the more recognizable biomes in Terraria. It is the biome you spawn in, after all. You’ll end up spending a lot of time in this biome. Multiple NPCs spawn here and, despite being a biome that’s accessible early, it also contains a handful of materials you can collect.
You most likely have built your Starter House here. Considering that, think of this Forest biome-themed house as an upgrade to the Starter House you’ve already built. You can make this house more spacious and you can use even more materials to give your house a look that resembles a beautiful cabin in the woods.
Forest House Materials

Work Bench or Table | At least one. | The Work Bench is used to create other items. You can also use a Table instead if the Work Bench won't fit your design. These count as your flat surface items. | A Work Bench requires 10 Woods and can be built by hand. The table requires eight Woods and must be made using a Work Bench. |
Chair or Bed | At least one. | These are your comfort items. | You'll need four Woods to build a Wooden Chair. You'll also need a Work Bench to build one. As for the bed, you'll need 15 Wood, 5 Silk, and you'll need a Sawmill to craft it. |

Give this house a more “homey” look by adding bookcases, a chimney, and more to it. Decorate the house in a way that fits the theme and suits your preference.
Mushroom House
The Mushroom House is more unique than the other themed houses in this guide. While you can definitely build this house for its stand-out blue hue design, its main purpose is to house the Truffle NPC. Truffle sells mushroom-themed items. The only home Truffle will accept is a house on the surface that has at least 100 tiles of Glowing Mushroom biome around it.
The thing is, there is no such thing as a surface Glowing Mushroom biome in Terraria. At least, not yet. If you want to give Truffle a home, not only do you need to build it, you’ll need to build him a biome in the overworld.
Truffle only appears during Hardmode. This means if you’re in the process of building a home for Truffle, you’ve advanced quite far. You now have items and materials that will make creating a surface Glowing Mushroom biome, and a Mushroom House, much easier.
Mushroom Biome and House Materials

---|---|---|---|
Mud Blocks | At least 100. | You'll need these blocks to grow Mushroom Grass plants. | Break these down from the ground using a pickaxe. |

Any light source | At least one. | A house needs a light source for it to be valid. | You can use a simple Torch for this house, which requires a Gel and a Wood to craft. |
For this build, the most important part is creating the biome. Use the 100 Mud Blocks and plant and Mushroom Grass Seeds. Once there are 100 blocks of Mushroom, the biome will change. You’ll know the biome has become a Mushroom biome when the background changes. After this, simply build the house however you wish.
Japanese House
Building a gorgeous and rustic house in Terraria inspired by Japanese architecture is a long and complicated process. However, the result will speak for itself. The long process may just be worth it.
This may be trickier than the previous themed houses here. However, what’s great about this is that you can place this virtually anywhere, as long as you have the correct materials to build it. You can place it underground too, but the house just looks perfect when it’s on the surface.

Living Wood Wand | At least one. | You'll use these to create a frame for the window. | You can find this in Living Wood Chests. |
Red and Blue Dynasty Shingles | As many as needed. | These are used as the roof of the house. | You can purchase these from the Traveling Merchant. |
Paintbrush | At least one. | You'll be painting a lot of blocks for this house, so this is very important for this build. | You can purchase this from the Painter. |
Paint | As many as needed. | For this build, you'll need gray, red, deep red, black, | You can purchase these from the Painter. You can make "deep" colors by applying a Dye Vat on the paint. |
The example Japanese house above isn’t that spacious, so it’s up to you if you want a house that’s bigger. Just be sure you have the necessary materials to do so.
Other Housing Tips and Ideas
The houses above, their design, and the materials required for them can give clear ideas on how you form your future houses. Among them, here are the ones you should definitely keep in mind moving forward, as well as a few more tips and techniques you can use.
- In this guide, the most commonly used comfort items, flat surface items, and light sources are chairs, tables, and torches, respectively. However, there are way more than you can use to validate your house. Here are some additional items you can use:

- Try building frames by stacking blocks on top of each other. It doesn’t just have to be one set of tiles thin.
- Add a foundation to the house. Dig out the dirt and replace it with different blocks.
- Paint. This is how you can truly customize your houses, rooms, and more.
- Elevate your house. Literally. Your houses don’t always need to be grounded. You can get creative with your designs and have your houses rise a few blocks above ground.
- Using fences as background walls will allow natural light to seep into the house, making it brighter.
- Put Pylons in your bases so you can warp between them with ease.
Once you’ve become confident in your house-building skills in Terraria, you can start playing around with designs of your own. Here are a handful of ideas you can make use of to start.
- Modern House
- Glass House
- Castle
- Tree House
- Underwater House
- Tower
- Holiday-themed House (Halloween, Christmas, etc.)
- Floating House
How to Uncorrupt a House
One of the things that can invalidate a house in Terraria is Corruption. This is a problem you’ll have to start dealing with when Corruption and Crimson arise during Hardmode. If your house gets touched or is within close proximity of Corruption, the house will become invalid.
When this happens and you check the validity of the house, you’ll receive the “This housing is corrupted” message.
There are multiple ways to address this, and some of them are extremely difficult and inconvenient. One of the ways to avoid getting corrupted housing is to make your bases float way above ground. However, this isn’t always convenient to do.
Another way to clear Corruption is to destroy corrupted blocks and replace them with Hallow ones. There should be about 50 tiles of uncorrupted blocks in between the house and the corrupted area.
The fastest way to approach this is to use the Clentaminator. This tool must then be equipped with Green Solution. This clears Corruption and Crimson from blocks, and even entire biomes.
You can purchase both the Clentaminator and the Green Solution from the Steampunker. This NPC appears after you defeat one mechanical boss during Hardmode.
