About Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Anyone familiar with the original Final Fantasy VII will likely be familiar with the Materia mechanic. For Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it’s been enhanced, offering even more ways to customize your character’s stats and abilities and deliver punishing blows on the battlefield.

As you make your way through the game, you’ll occasionally happen upon colorful orbs called Materia. Materia can be bought from vendors, found in the wild, or given as a reward for completing a quest or finishing a mini-game.

By heading to the Materia and Equipment screen in the Main Menu, you can slot Materia into your weapons and armor. The number of Materia slots varies depending on the piece of equipment you have, with stronger equipment often possessing more slots.

    Note
Certain Materia slots are connected. Support Materia—colored blue—must be paired with another Materia to work. For example, pairing the Magnify Support Materia with the Lightning Magic Materia will expand your attack to hit all enemies on the battlefield instead of just one.

There are five types of Materia: Command, Support, Magic, Independent, and Summon. Each type of Materia is a different color, making them easy to distinguish.

Here’s every Materia color in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth:

    • Command Materia is yellow
    • Support Materia is blue
    • Magic Materia is green
    • Independent Materia is purple
    • Summon Materia is red

Some Materia can be leveled up by earning AP. Each time you reach a new level, you’ll unlock more powerful spells or bonuses. To level up a Materia, make sure an active party member is equipped with it to earn AP. Some merchants sell higher-level Materia as you progress further in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so checking the inventory of all shops you come across is highly advised.
