How Fishing Works in Terraria
To start fishing in Terraria, all you really need is a Fishing Rod, some form of Bait (any insect caught in a net), and a large body of liquid. The latter includes Honey, Water, or even casting your line into Lava. If your player character is standing inside the liquid, you will also not be able to catch any fish.
Fishing Power, Explained
Fishing Power is a statistic that basically determines your success rate when fishing. The higher your Fishing Power, the higher the chances of getting rare loot and fish. Several factors determine Fishing Power: your current fishing gear (like your Rod and Bait), potion effects, Luck, and environmental variables like the weather.
The size of the liquid body (an environmental variable) where you drop your line can impact your Fishing Power more than other elements. Lakes with less than 300 tiles will have a hidden Fishing Power penalty, so you’ll be reeling in your line less frequently. If you want a good catch, you’re better off fishing in a larger pond. Cloudy or Overcast weather grants a +10% Fishing Power while Rain grants +20%. Normal weather inflicts no Fishing Power bonuses or penalties.
When fishing, Chum Buckets are your best friend! This handy item boosts your Fishing Power and the success rate of your angling endeavors. They have a 50% drop rate when fishing during the Blood Moon (so don’t skip it), by Wandering Eye Fish and Zombie Mermen. A single Chum Bucket will increase the Fishing Power by 11, two for a total of 17, and three for a max bonus of 20.
The ultimate set-up for a fishing day in Terraria will include your best Fishing Rod, high Fishing Power level Bait like Master Bait, and Fishing-specific accessories rewarded from the Angler, including the Angler Armor, Angler Earring, Tackle Box, and High Test Fishing Line.
Hidden Factors Impacting Fishing Power
Two main hidden factors can impact your overall Fishing Power: Luck and Fishing Power Scaling. Luck can increase or decrease your Fishing Power, depending on whether you have positive or negative Luck. You can boost this stat with Luck-related buff potions, biome-specific torches, and “Lucky” items like Garden Gnomes or Ladybugs.
Fishing Power scaling slightly reduces your overall Fishing Power if it reaches a really high level. This is a hidden way to keep your Fishing Power at a reasonable rate, even if you’re stacked with loads of buffs and high Fishing Power gear. As such, you will have a slightly reduced catch frequency of both fish and crates.
For example, your displayed Fishing Power may read as 329, but in actuality, your Fishing Power is 200 due to the 25% reduction scaling applied by the game.
To get a reasonable amount of Fishing Power, we recommend you craft a Fishing Potion (using a Vial of Water, a Crispy Honey Block, and a Waterleaf), a Fishing Bobber, and a Gummy Worm, obtained by transmuting a Gold Worm with Shimmer. All these items will give you a Fishing Power level of 53, not including your Bait or Fishing Rod.
Fishing Bait in Terraria
Terraria is a world of endless possibilities. As such, there are different types of Bait, each with varying Fishing Power levels. Most Bait is usually a Critter caught with a Bug Net. Ensure you have the Guide to Critter Companionship tool to avoid harming critters by accident.
Bait, especially those with a low Fishing Power, is often consumed while fishing. The durability scales with its Fishing Power, so you’re better off using a higher-quality Bait, rather than the Apprentice Bait, as an example.
Look below to see all the types of Bait in Terraria, including their respective Fishing Powers.

Angler NPC and Fishing Quests
The Angler is a must-have NPC for players who want to dive into fishing. Luckily for you, he can be unlocked fairly early. Upon entering a new Terraria world, you’ll see him as the Sleeping Angler spawning on Sand or water surface in the Ocean biome.
Once he’s moved in, the Angler will give you daily fishing quests at exactly 4:30 AM each day. To get your daily fishing quest, interact with the Angler and select his “Quest” option. There are 41 variants of quest fish, which can only be caught when their quest is active. The Angler is quite cryptic with his quests, but we’ve detailed each of his possible quotes, the corresponding fish, and where to catch them.
