Key Takeaway
The Mermaid’s Pendant is an item in Stardew Valley used to propose to an eligible NPC marriage candidate. It is only available from the Old Mariner for 5,000G once two criteria have been met:
- The player has an upgraded Farmhouse (with a double bed)
- The player has a ten Friendship Heart level with one marriage candidate
The Old Mariner spawns solely on rainy days, on the Rock Pools side of the Beach.
Unlike a traditional engagement ring, the Stardew Valley Mermaid Pendant is how you declare your intent to marry in-game. However, there are some conditions you must meet before being able to purchase this one-of-a-kind item.

Conditions to Purchase the Mermaid’s Pendant in Stardew Valley
Before you pop the question to a Stardew Valley NPC, you must have fulfilled two requirements before cementing your love with your potential partner: having the Upgraded Farmhouse and reaching ten Friendship Hearts.
Upgraded Farmhouse
Before taking the next step in a relationship, you’ll need Robin to upgrade your Farmhouse. This expansion creates enough room for two with a double bed. You don’t expect your spouse to sleep on the floor, do you? The total cost for this first Farmhouse upgrade is 450 Wood and 10,000G.
It’ll take Robin three days to complete this upgrade. She’ll also take time off with major festivals like the Feast of the Winter Star, so keep an eye on the in-game calendar and plan accordingly! Once your Farmhouse is suited and booted, you’re one step closer to securing the Mermaid Pendant in Stardew Valley!
Reach Ten Hearts With an Eligible Villager
You can’t propose to someone you barely know. There are twelve total marriage candidates in-game:
- Bachelors: Alex, Elliott, Harvey, Sam, Sebastian, Shane
- Bachelorettes: Abigail, Emily, Haley, Leah, Maru, Penny
Do your best to woo them with their Loved gifts and daily interactions to boost yourself to eight Friendship Hearts. You can gift them a Bouquet bought from Pierre for 200G, which changes their Social tab to “boyfriend” or “girlfriend.” Doing this ‘unfreezes’ the final two Friendship Hearts so you can get to ten and eventually gift them the Mermaid’s Pendant.
Where to Get a Mermaid’s Pendant in Stardew Valley
Once you’ve met the above conditions, you can buy the Stardew Valley Mermaid Pendant from the Old Mariner for 5,000G! A small price to pay for a lifetime of (in-game) happiness! This NPC spawns on the Rock Pool side of the Beach. You’ll need to have already repaired the destroyed bridge using 300 Wood.
The kicker is that the Old Mariner only ever spawns on rainy days. You can always use a Rain Totem for guaranteed rain, which requires you to increase your Foraging skill to Level 9 alongside one Hardwood, one Truffle Oil, and five Pine Tar. Spring is the season with the most rainy days, so we recommend buying the Mermaid Pendant then to save resources.
Cheating and infidelity are a no-go, so if you already have a husband or wife, tough luck! You can only buy another Mermaid’s Pendant if you’re single or divorced from your current spouse. The Mermaid’s Pendant also cannot be used in co-op with friends, with an entirely different item needed.
Once you have your Mermaid’s Pendant, feel free to propose to your partner whenever suits you. The wedding ceremony will happen three days after you propose, in the morning. Once you’re wed, you can think about life’s next steps, like having children or raising a farm of Blue Chickens—the possibilities are endless!
