What is an Evergaol in Elden Ring?
An Evergaol (ever∙jail) is an eternal jail for creatures sealed away to keep the Lands Between safe or to bury a secret forever. In Elden Ring, there 11 evergaols scattered in various regions for you to find.
Every Evergaol is challenging due to the following reasons:
- You can not summon a Spirit Ash, an NPC, or another Tarnished to help you out. (Only the Forlorn Hound Evergaol allows you to summon Blaidd the Half-Wolf as part of his and Merchant Kale’s questline.)
- Each boss has a different build, which puts your unique playstyle to test. You may be tempted to respec (change build) or find a way to cheese them. It’s all up to you.
- Not every Evergaol has a Stake of Marika nearby.
- Some are Imp-Sealed, which requires you to use Stonesword Keys unlock it. (Stonesword Keys are limited.)
On the bright side, all Evergaols are completely optional. When you lose your Runes, you can easily recover it from the outside. You’ll also be rewarded with an item that you could not get anywhere else. As for lore lovers, you’ll get secrets to tell.
The Evergaol Progression Route
Do not let the Evergaol locations fool you. There are some that contain a more challenging boss to defeat compared to the mandatory enemies found in the region.
The following is the recommended Evergaol progression, along with the minimum level and weapon level to consider:
Evergaol | Minimum Level | Standard Weapon Level | Unique Weapon Level |
---|---|---|---|
Forlorn Hound Evergaol | 16 | +1 | +1 |
Malefactor's Evergaol | 20 | +3 | +2 |
Weeping Evergaol | 25 | +3 | +2 |
Cuckoo's Evergaol | 25 | +4 | +3 |
Sellia Evergaol | 30 | +8 | +3 |
Royal Grave Evergaol | 30 | +12 | +4 |
Stormhill Evergaol | 35 | +14 | +5 |
Golden Lineage Evergaol | 45 | +16 | +6 |
Lord Contender's Evergaol | 95 | +20 | +8 |
Ringleader's Evergaol | 100 | +24 | +9 |
Ordina Liturgical Town Evergaol | 100 | +24 | +9 |
To know if a weapon is standard or unique, you simply must look at the requirements for upgrading. A Regular Weapon requires Smithing Stones to upgrade. Alternatively, a Unique Weapon requires Somber Smithing Stones to upgrade.

The Fingerprint Armor Set is a ragged version of the Knight Armor Set that has been touched by the Three Fingers and burned by the Flame of Frenzy. It’s a Medium Load Armor with a low Focus (Madness and Sleep Resistance).
Vyke’s Dragonbolt is an Incantation Spell that buffs your weapon with Lightning Damage and buffs your body with 35% Lightning Damage Negation. It also increases your Equip Load by 15% and lasts for 70 seconds.

In the Ringleader’s evergaol, you’ll be fighting Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader. She wears the Black Knife Armor set, which boosts her stealth, and wields a Black Knife imbued with Destined Death that can one-shot you.
She’s imprisoned either for penance or to bury Ranni the Witch’s secret. By order, she led a team of elite Black Knife assassins to steal a fragment of the Rune of Death and to murder Godwyn the Golden, which sparked the Shattering.

- Position and reposition yourself on the same rock, and spam your Heavy attacks throughout the fight.
Rewards: Runes and Black Knife Tiche
Upon defeating Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader, you’ll get 80,000 Runes (Base NG) and Black Knife Tiche.
Black Knife Tiche is among the Legendary Spirit Ashes powerful enough to defeat some Bosses alone, provided it’s not a duo boss fight.
If you’re having a difficult time defeating Malenia, Blade of Miquella, summon Black Knife Tiche to help counter her HP regain.
Ordina, Liturgical Town Evergaol
The Ordina Evergaol is different to the other 10 evergaols. You’re only required to solve a puzzle, similar to that of the Sella, Town of Sorcery in Caelid. But you cannot summon Torrent or a Spirit Ash within.
Since the town is located in the Consecrated Snowfield, you must be at least Level 100 with a +20 Standard weapon or +8 Unique weapon.
From the Inner Consecrated Snowfield grace site, summon Torrent and ride northwest. Beyond the freezing river is the Ordina, Liturgical Town.
Although it seems empty on the outside, the town becomes alive as you enter its evergaol. But before doing so, make sure to have a Sentry Torch at hand, and watch out for the enemies lurking around.
Enemy: Lesser Black Knife Assassin
There are four invisible Lesser Black Knife Assassins guarding the town. Beware of their Grab and Stab Attack that can one-shot you. Use a Sentry Torch to reveal their presence, which can be bought from the Hermit Merchant in the Capital Outskirts.
You don’t have to defeat them, although if you do, they don’t respawn. This makes the evergaol easier to explore. They can also drop the Ghost Glovewort (9), which can be rare to find and expensive to buy.
If you choose not to get the Sentry Torch, all you must do is keep on sprinting around and climbing up to the rooftops.
Enemy: Albinauric Wolfback Archer
While the Lesser Black Knife Assassins guard the grounds of the town, the Albinauric Wolfback Archers got the rooftops covered. These aggressive archers wield a magic version of the Albinauric Bow.
When within range, they’ll spam Triple Enchanted Shots towards you, dealing massive magic damage. They’re tanky archers with weak legs that are immune to Poison.
It is not necessary to defeat these Archers. But if you do, they can drop the following items:
- Around 4,500 Runes (Base NG)
- Blue Silver Armor Set (2% base drop rate per piece):
- Albinauric Bow (4% base drop rate)
- St. Trina’s Arrows of 5 (2.50% base drop rate)
- Standard Arrows of 5 (10% base drop rate)
- Albinauric Bloodclot (15% base drop rate)
Albinauric Wolfback Archer Cheese
- Cast Night Maiden’s Mist for the unalerted archers.
- Spam Rock Sling or use Greatbow to knock them off the roof.
Reward: Waygate to Miquella’s Haligtree
Upon solving the Ordina, Liturgical Town Evergaol, you’ll activate a Waygate that teleports you to Miquella’s Haligtree. It’s the only way you can get there. The Waygate is located in a room with a long staircase, northeast of the evergaol.
