To make a Bucket in Minecraft, you’ll need a resource that can only be gained through mining. Furthermore, you’ll need to refine it before using this metal to craft a Bucket. Thankfully, the steps are simple.

What You Need to Make a Bucket
To make a Bucket, you’ll need 3 Iron Ingots. On a Crafting Table, the recipe is in the shape of a “V”. In other words, by placing 1 Iron Ingot on the bottom-middle slot. After that, put 1 Iron Ingot on the middle-left slot and the last Iron Ingot on the middle-right slot. This crafting recipe will give you 1 Bucket.
How to Get Iron Ingots
The easiest way to get Iron Ingots is usually to dig up Iron Ore blocks from underground. Iron Ore spawns between layers 1 to 63, so you won’t have to go very deep to find some. After finding Iron Ore, when you mine it, you’ll get Raw Iron. You can turn Raw Iron into Iron Ingots by smelting it in a Furnace.
Where to Find Buckets
It’s also possible for you to find a Bucket as Chest loot in some naturally generated structures. Here are the odds of finding a Bucket in one of these places:
- Dungeon Chest – 18.5%
- Woodland Mansion Chest – 18.5%
- Village Savannah House Chest – 11.3%
What You Can Use a Bucket for
You can use a Bucket to scoop up different kinds of substances. To use a Bucket like this, you will need to hold it in your hand and then use it on whatever you want to pick up. You can scoop up water, lava, and powdered snow to get a Water Bucket, Lava Bucket, or Powdered Snow Bucket respectively. Furthermore, you can also dump out the contents of each kind of bucket to place whatever was inside onto a chosen surface. You can also place the contents of a bucket into a Cauldron, as well as pick up the contents of Cauldrons with an empty Bucket.
Using Empty Buckets on Land Mobs
If you use a Bucket on some types of mobs, you can get some Milk. This is possible when using a Bucket on a Cow, a Mooshroom, or a Goat. Milk Buckets that are created from doing so can’t be dumped out like with other Bucket contents. The only way that you can empty a Milk Bucket is by drinking it while using it in your hand or using it to make a Cake. The crafting recipe for Cakes will always give you back the Buckets used.
Using Water Buckets on Aquatic Mobs
In addition to being able to get resources from animals by using a Bucket, you can also straight-up collect small mobs in them. With a Water Bucket, you can collect 4 variations of fish: Cod, Pufferfish, Salmon, and Tropical Fish. Furthermore, in this same manner, you can scoop up an Axolotl. While on the topic of aquatic mobs, it should also be mentioned that you will need Buckets of Tropical Fish to feed an Axolotl. Just keep in mind that such feats are not possible with an empty Bucket–only a Water Bucket.
