To make a Splash Potion of Weakness in Minecraft, you’ll mostly need drops from a few common enemies. However, there are 2 major steps in creating Splash Potions of Weakness. Afterward, you can use this potion to make combat easier.

Step 1: What You Need to Make a Splash Water Bottle

Turning water bottles into splash water bottles with gunpowder.

Before you can create an actual Splash Potion of Weakness, you’ll have to first make a Splash Water Bottle. To make a Splash Water Bottle, you’ll need to infuse a regular Water Bottle with Gunpowder at a Brewing Stand.

This is the first step for making any kind of Splash Potion, so remembering what you need can be handy for later tasks. When making Splash Water Bottles (and any other kind of potion), you should always do so 3 at a time, as the bottom of Brewing Stands has 3 slots. Doing so consumes the same amount of resources but triples your potion-making efficiency.

    How to Get Gunpowder

These gray piles of dust are the most crucial ingredient in making Splash Water Bottles and can be obtained in a few different ways. The best way to get Gunpowder is to kill Creepers, as they are quite common and have a chance to drop from 0 to 2 Gunpowder. You can also get 0 to 2 Gunpowder from slaying Ghasts in the Nether, but collecting the drops from them is usually tricky and dangerous since you often have to take them down at range with a Bow or Crossbow.

The last mob that you can get Gunpowder from are Witches, who can drop from 0 to 6 Gunpowder. Though, since they’re a pretty rare spawn in the overworld, you can’t really farm them effectively.

Besides getting Gunpowder as mob drops, Wandering Traders can also sell you some. Some of these drifting merchants will give you 1 Gunpowder for 1 Emerald each. You can also find Gunpowder in the Chests of a few naturally-generated structures. In the Chests of Dungeons, Desert Temples, and Woodland Mansions, you’ll have about a 60% chance to find 1 to 8 pieces of Gunpowder. You can also find between 1 to 5 pieces of Gunpowder in the Chests of Shipwrecks, but only around 20% of the time.

How to Make a Water Bottle

To make a Water Bottle, use a Glass Bottle on some water. This process works the same as when you try to fill up a Bucket with water to make a Water Bucket. As for crafting Glass Bottles, you’ll just need 3 Glass blocks.

On a Crafting Table, make a “v” shape with 1 Glass on the bottom-middle slot, 1 on the middle-left slot, and the last 1 on the middle-right slot. This recipe should look familiar, as it’s the same one as you use to make a Bucket, but swapping out the Iron Ingots for Glass blocks.

Step 2: How to Turn a Splash Water Bottle Into a Splash Potion of Weakness

Making 3 splash potions of weakness with a fermented spider eye.

After you’ve made some Splash Water Bottles, you’re now ready to make some Splash Potions of Weakness. You’ll need to infuse them with a Fermented Spider Eye. As usual for maximum potion-making efficiency, be sure to use 3 Splash Water Bottles at a time.

How to Make a Fermented Spider Eye

This disgustingly-named brewing ingredient can be crafted from a few relatively basic components. First, you’ll understandably need a Spider Eye to make one. In addition to that, you’ll also need a Brown Mushroom and some Sugar. On a Crafting Table, place 1 Sugar on the centermost slot, 1 Spider Eye on the bottom-middle slot, and 1 Brown Mushroom on the middle-left slot. This recipe will yield 1 Fermented Spider eye each.

Every Spider and Cave Spider have about a 33% chance to drop 1 Spider Eye when they die. Interestingly, Witches also have a chance to drop Spider Eyes, though they can give you from 0 to 6 upon their death. As mentioned before, however, Witches are pretty rare and aren’t the kind of mob you can farm easily. Therefore, you’re better off slaying Spiders for Spider Eyes.

In regards to Brown Mushrooms, you can find them in a variety of places. The most common spot to pick them up is in a Swamp biome, as this kind of landscape is somewhat common. Though you can also find Brown Mushrooms in Old Growth Taiga biomes and the rare yet fascinating Mushroom Field biomes. On top of that, you can also come across Brown Mushrooms in the Nether. The only real requirement for Mushrooms of any kind to spawn is that the light level must be below 12. As such, caves in the aforementioned biomes are the ideal spots to search for Mushrooms.

Lastly, for Sugar, you’ll need to harvest some Sugar Cane. Each piece of Sugar Cane will give you 1 Sugar. Alternatively, if you have access to Honey Bottles, you can convert those into 3 Sugar each.

What a Splash Potion of Weakness Does

After you throw a Splash Potion of Weakness, it will shatter and shoot out black particles in a small area around the site of impact. These particles will apply the Weakness status effect to any entity within the area. The Weakness status effect will cause damage done by the afflicted to be decreased by 1 (half a Heart). As such, foes who are affected by Weakness will do slightly less damage to you with each attack. The effects of a Splash Potion of Weakness will last for 1 minute and 7 seconds.

However, you should always be careful when throwing Splash Potions, as their effects can also hit you. When you toss your Splash Potions, make sure to aim far away.

The Difference Between a Splash Potion of Weakness and a Potion of Weakness

A Splash Potion of Weakness is a potion variant that you can throw. As such, it can be used offensively—almost like a grenade. Conversely, a regular Potion of Weakness can only be consumed. If you drink a Potion of Weakness, you will only give yourself the Weakness status effect. Enemies around you will not be affected.

If you’re after a specific Advancement, this can be useful, otherwise, it can be detrimental to your survival in Minecraft.
