The Depth Strider enchantment in Minecraft is a boots-only one. If you wear a pair of boots with Depth Strider on them, you’ll be able to swim faster in water. There are 3 levels of this enchantment.

How the Depth Strider Enchantment Works
As opposed to directly increasing your swimming speed, Depth Strider reduces how much moving through water slows you down. When you swim around normally, your swimming speed will be about 34% of your walking speed. Since your walking speed in Minecraft is 4.32 blocks per second, your swimming speed is 1.44 blocks per second.
Each level of Depth Strider will increase your swimming speed by 22% (+0.96 blocks per second). This enchantment can be applied to any kind of footwear, from Leather Boots to Diamond Boots.
The Effects of Each Level of the Depth Strider Enchantment
- +22% swimming speed at Depth Strider level 1 (2.40 blocks per second)
- +44% swimming speed at Depth Strider level 2 (3.36 blocks per second)
- +66% swimming speed at Depth Strider level 3 (4.32 blocks per second)
Stacking the Effects of Depth Strider and Dolphin’s Grace
The effect of Depth Strider stacks with the Dolphin’s Grace effect. The amount your swimming speed increases is by a flat value generated by combining the buffs of each effect.
Dolphin’s Grace increases your horizontal swimming speed up to a swift 9.80 blocks per second. By comparison, traversing water in a Boat is only twice your walking speed (which makes your Boat speed 8.64 blocks per second). This means that Dolphin’s Grace is better for getting around in the water, however, to obtain this effect, you need to swim close to a Dolphin. Furthermore, the Dolphin’s Grace effect only lasts 5 seconds.
With that said, for brief periods, you can combine the effects of Depth Strider and Dolphin’s Grace to get up to some crazy underwater speeds! Your swimming speed will be increased by a flat value of 8.98 blocks per second when both Dolphin’s Grace and Depth Strider are active at the same time. This flat value gets added again for each increasing level of the Depth Strider enchantment.
