What Do Pigs Eat In Minecraft?

To feed a Pig in Minecraft, you’re going to need a Carrot, Potato, or Beetroot. Pigs love these vegetables, which you can find fairly easily in Villages. After you grab some, you can even make your own farms.

How to Get Pig Food

The only foods that you can feed Pigs are Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroots, which all have a decent chance of spawning in the farms of Villages. There are other ways to obtain these vegetables, but looting Villages is by far the most reliable and profitable method. Even better, the Villagers don’t mind at all!

In the Java Edition of Minecraft, there is a 50% chance of a Village spawning within 500 blocks of your world spawn point. However, in the Bedrock Edition, this chance is 66%. Furthermore, the biomes that Villages can spawn in are a bit different between versions as well. Here are all of the biomes that Villages can spawn in for the Java Edition:

• Plains
• Savanna
• Taiga
• Snowy Tundra
• Desert

In addition to the above, the Bedrock Edition can also spawn Villages in these biomes:

• Snowy Taiga
• Sunflower Plains

How to Get Carrots

You have a 20% chance of finding Carrots on a Village farm. As with all crops, you can harvest Carrots by breaking them with your hand or any tool. When you break a block of fully matured Carrots, it will drop 2 to 5 Carrots as drops.

If you want to plant some Carrots for a farm, you just need to till the land with a hoe and then plant a Carrot in it. After using the Carrot on the tilled soil to plant it, you’ll need to make sure that there is some water nearby, otherwise, the Carrots won’t grow. You can tell when the soil will grow plants by its color; dark brown soil is fertile. Carrots have 4 visible growth stages, so be patient. They are fully matured when you can see their orange bodies poking up through the dirt.

It’s also possible for you to find a Carrot as mob loot. Husks, Zombies, and Zombie Villagers have a 0.83% chance to drop a Carrot when they are defeated. Additionally, you can find Carrots as loot in certain structures–specifically Pillager Outposts and Shipwrecks. In Pillager Outposts, you may discover 3 to 5 Carrots in a Chest at a 57.5% appearance rate. In Shipwrecks, the Supply Chests have a 42.1% chance of containing 4 to 8 Carrots.

How to Get Potatoes

Much like with Carrots, you have a 20% chance of finding Potatoes on a Village farm. When you harvest a fully matured Potato block, it will drop between 1 to 5 Potatoes.

Also like Carrots, to plant a Potato, you just need to put it into some fertile soil and wait a little while. When your Potatoes are fully matured, at the 4th visual growth stage, there will be yellow bulbs showing at the base of the leafy portion. Just be careful, as there is a 2% chance of getting a Poisonous Potato, which will understandably poison you if you eat it.

You can also get a Potato as mob loot, and at the same chance as a Carrot, 0.83%, after defeating a Husk, Zombie, or Zombie Villager. Further continuing the similarities to Carrots, you can find Potatoes in Pillager Outpost Chests at an appearance rate of 57.5%, however, you can find between 2 to 5 of them. In Shipwrecks, Supply Chests have a 42.1% chance to carry 2 to 6 Potatoes in them. Conveniently, Village Chests can also hold some Potatoes, 1 to 7 to be exact, and at appearance rates ranging from 60% to 70% depending on the biome.

How to Get Beetroots

At lower odds than either Carrots or Potatoes, you have a 10% chance of finding Beetroots on a Village farm. When a Beetroot block is broken, it will drop 1 Beetroot and 1 to 4 Beetroot Seeds. Since the yield isn’t very high, this crop will take longer to farm than others.

You can make a Beetroot farm by planting Beetroot Seeds in fertile soil and then waiting for them to reach their 4th growth stage, which is when some brownish-purple bodies begin to pop up. It is worth mentioning that Beetroot grows a bit faster than other crops, though not by enough to make Beetroot yields higher than that of many other vegetables.
